Owner description: As soon as it opened at the end of the 19th century, the luxurious Old England department store earned an excellent reputation for its highly distinctive building. The entrance to the building is a jewel of the Art nouveau style while the rest is in perfect harmony with the neoclassical ensemble on the Place Royale, and just around the corner from the Grand Place and Central Station, no less! It's here in this architectural gem that the MIM took up residence in June 2000. The museum's reputation is mainly built on its extraordinary collections. With a wealth of some 7000 instruments, the MIM is currently an internationally renowned instrumental museum. Once inside, you'll embark on a true tour of the musical world. After your trip past the some 1500 pieces on exhibit, the instruments and their history will no longer hold any secrets: from viole da gamba from the Court of Brussels to the 20th century theremin, and even including the African kora! And be sure not to miss our area devoted to the instruments of Adolphe Sax. The MIM is nothing other than a place to experience music. An infrared headphone system allows each visitor to explore the thematic tours to the tune of the melodious sound of the instruments presented. Translation is no problem. Everyone knows that music is a universal language.

Incredible building exterior, great collection of instruments, the Hop-on and Hop-off bus stops right in front.

“Musicians dream”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 28, 2014

A perfect retreat from the city, and a must see while in Brussels. This is an easy and lovely walk from the Parc Metro stop. I only had a few hours between trains to explore the museum. I wasn't able to take in the entire museum - but what I saw was amazing. Anyone with any interest in music will find this treasure delightful. The building is a charmer, once inside you are given headphones - your choice of several languages - to enhance the visit. One will find examples of an instruments 'progression' through the years and the headsets automatically (magically) play pieces that feature the instrument one is standing near. Don't miss the glass harmonica and the pianos.

“Don't know about the museum, but the café on the rooftop”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

is awesome. Great view of Brussels, great look, indoor and outdoors. They also make a mean brunch on Sunday morning.
Going to the café is free, just take a ticket at the entrance asking to go up there.
Ideal after a long day and visit of the Magritte museum (right accross the street) or at the start of a lazy Sunday

“Unexpected treat”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

I found myself with half a day in Brussels following a business meeting, and based on the TripAdvisor recommendation, went to the Musical Instrument Museum even though I'm not particularly musically inclined. It was terrific! They have over 10,000 instruments and the headsets let you experience each one. The building itself is also beautiful. I highly recommend this and think children would love it, too.

“No need to be a maestro to appreciate it”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 27, 2014

No need to be a maestro to appreciate it... The strength of this place is that you get audio guide which allow you to hear a large choice of old instruments when standing nearby them.
Sometimes you also wish you could see a video to see how the instrument is played.
The museum is poorly ventilated though but definitely nice to visit and quite unique.
