“Great enthusiast-run landmark”
Review of Maison Cauchie

Maison Cauchie
Reviewed June 8, 2013

One of only three houses designed by Paul Cauchie, the facade and unusually, the interior are adorned with striking sgraffites. The story of Paul Cauchie and his wife, their house, and its resurrection is recounted by very enthusiastic volunteers.

Definitely worth an hour during the first weekend of the month when it is open.

I love art nouveau and I especially took a day out while in Brussels to cover art nouveau sites. I loved most of the sites in the Horta museum vicinity. The Cauchie house, unfortunately, was a real disappointment. I arrived an hour early and confirmed with the guy manning the building that there would be guided tours in an hour. This conversation was in English and the guy spoke perfectly good English.

When I returned at the set time, however, I was told the tour is actually in French, and that if I wanted an English translation, would have to wait for another hour. I agreed. After waiting for half an hour, the same guy then came to say I should actually join the same tour, and that he would just give me some brief descriptions after the tour in English. He was quite rude. He could not answer a basic question I asked about the painting on display there. All in all, this for me amounted to a tourist rip off.

As our discussion turned sour, I then noticed that they never displayed any information about guided tours or entrance fees, nor did they give me a receipt when I paid my money. Given how poorly this site compared with other great art nouveau sites I saw in Brussels, this museum should not have been listed in the Brussels tourism website at par with Horta museum or Old English House. I mean, this is a meagre building lacking in any harmony or aesthetics, with some whacky frescoes some guy designed for his wife, which the wife was so embarrassed about that she covered them with wallpapers soon after he died???!

the guide showed us lots of details of the architecture and the artwork in the building. Too bad they don't make such houses anymore these days.
