Description: Babeko restaurant in the heart of Brussels, just a few steps outside Brussels very first city wall and near a dozen theatres, is a hotbed of creativity. Sited in an ancient building the oak beams have been dated to 1567 Babekos menu is rooted in timeless French techniques and draws inspiration from the rest of the world too. Each dish is arranged as a beautiful little sculpture on a smartly-designed plate with scribble of sauce. The ambience is vibrant and trendy, the dcor a breathtaking modern interpolation into the old house. Private tables in the vaulted cellars are lit with scads of candles, while the sun pours down on the terrace outside.

“Raw chicken. No apology.”
Reviewed May 23, 2011

Just had set lunch deal. The main course, chicken wrappen in a kind of cling film with tomatoes and other vegetables looked good but after a few bites I noticed that the chicken was completely raw inside. Called the waiter and got a replacement, ie half a portion as I had already eaten some of the undercooked stuff and no apology at all. The sauce and vegetables tasted nice though… house white is overpriced.
It stuns me that a mistake like that is made with a set lunch deal with only a few customers. Time pressure and workload are no excuse in this scenario.
Mistakes can happen though but it's how - as a manger or waiter - you deal with it and for Babeko this seems to be "ignore it happened".

“One time was OK. Two times will be too much.”
Reviewed June 12, 2010

- Very noisy.
- Nice decor;
- Not a good selection for the house wine.
- Waiters friendly but too familiar.
- Inventive food but not worthy.
- At the end a bit of deception.

“Good snack and beer spot”
Reviewed June 23, 2008

My wife and I ate here twice in late May. We sat outside, as the weather was nice and the inside was full of "tour bus" diners. We had some beers, seafood appetizers and gazpacho, which was quite good. I recommend it for this type of dining. The waiters all spoke fluent English.
