The Martinique is located right on the orginal Mechelen center on Korenmarket (the corn or grain market site). This is the smaller center (a bit southwest of the traditional large main square or Grote Mrkt) with a few pubs and nice restaurants and a hamburger grill shed placed in the middle of the square. Smaller and more intimate than the restuarants at Grote Mrkt. The service was attentive, though food delivery was a bit slow when I ordered the special of the day - Grilled Catfish (Zeewolf). Food was very good. Prices are a bit expensive, but overall a very good meal.

We came out of the nh-hotel and this was the first restaurant we saw. Decide to go in and did not regret that decision. Very nice ambiance, good host and waitress, and very good food. We both love chateau briand and in this case it was a perfect choise! Also the starters we had where up to standard. Would be nice in summer as well when you can sit outside on the terrace. Price / quality is certainly OK.

The reviews triggered me to visit this restaurant. I had a plat du jour; Pladijs met nieuwe aardappelen (plaice with new potatoes). The plaice was ok, the new potatoes were rather hard "krieltjes". And that was all there was: a not inspiring dish. Not the surprise I hoped for. Instead I got a surprise on the billl: a moderate glass of white housewine costed 6€. The patron doesn't encourage you to watch the menu, you better do.

I attended this restaurant as a single party while on business. The decor was quite modern throughout. Although the beer menu is limited and contains mostly belgian beers popular in the US, the wine list was decent with some good values. Overall the food options and prices are great. Most starters were around 15 euros while dinner entrees were approximately 20-27 euros.

There were approximately 8 starter choices, 6 salad choices, 10 main entree selections and 8 dessert options. In addition to the menu, there were a few daily creations prepared by the chef.

I had the scampi (delicious) and the duck breast served with braised leeks and a tangy orange sauce. The presentation was simple, but the flavors were great! Beware that the service is slow which I don't mind because the bartender is also the server and there is only one. The restaurant seats approximately 30-40 people so you can imagine how busy the poor server was. However, this did not impact the quality of her ability to rotate in and around tables as if it was her standard routine.

Save this restaurant for a nice dinner out and don't expect traditional flemish dishes on the menu.
