If you are fit, try the tower! It is well worth the exhausting walk up the winding staircase! The view is great, on a clear day you can see Ghent's harbor, Antwerps harbor, and Brussels! It is also a beautiful church with a lot of history.

Beautiful cathedral with a great history. The visit is free but if you feel up to it you can climb all the way to the top of the tower (you have to pay a fee for the tower).

While visiting the town of Mechelen, we took the time to visit St Rombout cathedral: absolutely worthwhile; Very authentic scenery, you have to not mind the many steps

St. Rombouts Cathedral is a typical gothic style cathedral with some beautifull painting and sculpture.St. Rombouts Torren is the tower with the bellfry, who rules the town. Many years were needed for this tower to finish. The belfry is indeed the bigest I've ever seen.Every day there are musicians who play songs, using the many bells of this bellfry, a rare acoustic happening of this town. The view from the top is fantastic! You can see the hole city and if the sky is clear, you can see far away to Antwerp. This tower is the trade mark of the city and it's the first thing you see in the sky, when you come close to the city by train.
Your feet and knees should be in a rather good condition to go up (and down!) the 970 steps of the tower.

St. Rumbold's Cathedral is one of those impressive cathedrals of Europe you want to see. It was build in 13th and 14th centuries and the remains of St Rombout are supposedly buried there. Allowing some time to visit the Cathedral and see it in detail is worthwhile due to its architectural and artistic beauty. Do not miss the impressive tower with over 500 stairs.
