Die Broederkes is an intimate experience slightly hidden from most travelers in the Mechelen area. The dining room is completely decorated in candlelight which truly compliments the experience and can create either the perfect atomosphere for a romantic evening or even as a single traveler on busines (such as myself). Since this is fondue, you are the chef and determine the overall outcome of your meal. However, the restaurant does guide you with a menu of meats to choose from (Beef, Lamb, Turkey, Chicken, Fish - and even Horse if one so desires). A vegetarian option is available, but reservations MUST be made for a vegetarian meal so that the restaurant can ensure an assortment of vegetables are available.
The waitstaff are very hospitable do speak english. Although the menu in the window is in dutch/french, an english menu is available upon request. All entrees are served with a boiled potato and a salad as well as approximately 7 different sauces. The oil used in the fondue is grapeseed oil which adds a superb flavor to the meats being cooked. With regards to cheese fondue - there is no cheese course available. However, the servings sizes of the main meat selection and sides are plenty to satisfy the diner.
For dessert, there are options of chocolate fondue or ice cream. If you just want a cup of coffee and still have a sweet tooth, the restuarant serves an assortment of candies with every cup of coffee ordered.
Overall, I was completely impressed by this restaurant as I figured the ambience would outweigh the experience with the meal. However, I was pleasantly surprised and hope to make another trip to Mechelen just to experience this gem. Reservations are recommended as the place is only open Thursday-Sunday evenings after 7:00pm.
