“A hidden gem in Antwerp”
Reviewed October 22, 2013

Sent by a very helpful Hilton receptionist to this excellent restaurant in the city of Antwerp just 10 minutes walk from the main square. This is a meat eaters paradise with a wonderful menu. The ambience was excellent with lavish décor and quirky pots and vases around the walls that the Antwerpens do so well.

Food was very good and well served. The wine menu was well balanced and some good choices.

In English the name of the place means The Salty Kiss.

Well worth a visit and stop of at the inn called the Muze either before or after for late night jazz

“Very tasty dinner and quality service in Antwerp city centre”
Reviewed September 21, 2013

We booked a table for six. Part of our group took the 5 course menu, others opted for the 3 course menu. Aside from the food being delicious, they also served an extra little dish for the people who took the 3 course menu each time the a dish of the 5 course menu was served. No extra charge. That's service!
We'd definitely go back, either for a romantic evening with just the two of us, or for a dinner with friends.

“24th August - Le Zoute Zoen”
Reviewed August 26, 2013

Every year, when we are in Belgium, me and my wife go to Le Zoute Zoen. But last Saturday, we were very surprised. Normally we have a table in the front. But this time, an unknown gentlemen who was wearing a costume, gave us a table at the back. It was too hot there. Luckily, we had an “identification point” on the older, funny lady.
Unfortunately, the rest of the evening was as bad as the beginning. We had to wait for more than half an hour for the starter. Also for the other dishes, we had to wait too long.
Finally the quality of the food, was definitely not the quality we want for the price we paid.

“Attitude high, Performance poor”
Reviewed August 24, 2013

The ambiance is very nice, library like.

We had a reserved table. Upon arrival nobody brought us to it but told us that there would be one in a gap at the rear.

The seating is very tight. When somebody wanted to leave the neighboring table I put the bottle of wine away to avoid it not to fall down.

The menu selection shown on their website was outdated and replaced entirely - fortunately not the price for their menus. We took the Zoute Zoen three course menu.

Beer obviously is not available. Therefore we decided for a wine - not available by glass, only whole bottles, very selected half ones. Water did not appear on the drinking menu. I do not like to ask for the price of mineral water and always feel outsmarted by such practices..

We could order quite fast - the starters came also in an acceptable limit of time, but for the main course we had to wait 75 min. since arrival, by far too long. Obviously also from the host's perspective because we got - not included in the menu and finally not charged - a Gazpacho in a whisky tumbler with a soup spoon. Have you tried already to empty a tumbler with a soup spoon? Nice challenge.

The duck I ordered as main course was not roasted properly or simply was already too old. The rest of our menu items was o.k. on regard to the cooking and presentation.

For the cheese as third course the restaurant opted for raisin bread and removed the rest of the bread. Not everybody's taste.

For a restaurant which obviously wants to be or at least to become an upscale market player we has not been satisfied at all.

Le Zoute Zoen would like to respond to this review, as it do has some misunderstandings:

- The website menu is the same as the menu in the restaurant, only the pictures are outdated. So we don't know which website was checked for this.

- We do have beer: Stella Artois, Duvel, Hoegaarden & De Koninck. Maybe not shown on the wine & drink list, but simply asking will do the trick.

- We have 3 white wines & 2 red wines served by glass, shown on the menu and also again something you can ask when misunderstood.

- We have about 8 different half bottles of white wine and 8 different half bottles of red wine, including the wine of the house, so in our eyes that is not really "very selected"

- We indeed do not mention the price of our water anywhere, as they are normal like in other restaurants. Again, you are the paying customer, feel free to ask anything you want.

- If you first have something to drink, then have a starter, then a small soup in between and then have your main course, 75 minutes is an average waiting time. If you need to be somewhere at a certain time, again, asking to speed things up a little, is not a problem at all.

- The soup in between the Zoenmenu is something you always receive on the house, not as a compensation for long waiting, everybody gets one.

- As it is for free, we indeed serve it in a tumbler glass, and you can finish perfectly with a soup spoon.

- If your duck, or any other course for that matter, is not roasted well or not to your wish, you can always tell on of the waiters and we will take it back without a problem and make sure it is compensated. If you say something on the moment we can fix it, if you say something the next day, we can't.

- We give raisin bread next to the cheese, if you like to have normal bread, again, please just ask. The waiters are there to help you, this is their job.

Thank you

“Good food, reasonable service”
Reviewed August 11, 2013

The restaurant is really beautiful and cozy. We had the menu which was really good value for money, including an excellent vitello tonnato. If a negative thong should be mentioned it would be an excessive use of salt (but as I understand the name of the place means 'The Salty Kiss(!)). The service was all right but far from exceptional. The wines served with the menu were really not very interesting (especially an unbalanced Primitivo), but this has to be seen in the light of a very reasonable price.
