I stayed at the Matelote for one night while travelling through the Benelux. I had a small room on the third floor - number 9, I want to say. I find the hotel to be charming. Yes the rooms are bit small, but you can tell they have tried hard to update them.
To be clear - this is not a big Western Chain hotel. If you are looking for a loaded mini bar, a gym, a glistening lobby with elevators, bellhops and wheelchair access, go to the Hilton down the street. In the process, you will lose all of the charm, the magnificent staff, the perfect location and the personal attention afforded to you at the Matelote. The restaurant is apparently very well regarded in the city. As for the other reviews, if you can't carry your luggage up a flight of stairs, you are either too fat, too weak or you packed too much. The staff is happy to help, though I declined. You can't beat the value, either.
The 16th century charm with modern touches makes for a very cool boutique establishment. I would happily return to this hotel.More
