We stayed here for a night in dec 07. The design of the hotel is great, perfect for a night in the lively city. However on check out i was asked by Peter if i knew where the two large towels from our room were. A bit taken aback, i informed Peter that we had to dry ourselves using small towels. By this point i was a bit angry as i had just been accused of stealing some towels!!

I received no apology, just " i have to ask......" Actually, no you don't', its rude and not very good for your business. This completely changed my opinion of both the hotel and its owner. Unfortunately this experience has meant that i wouldn't go back to the Matelote

We stayed here on 20 and 21 August and had a thoroughly enjoyable time. The owners were extremely friendly and helpful. The room we stayed in was calm and peaceful and decorated with considerable style - loved the extra large bath and oversized rain shower. Details such as complementary soft drinks and pre-programmed ipod music systems were much appreciated and the bed, made up in crisp white cotton, was very comfortable. The common areas of the hotel are beautifully decorated and we enjoyed a drink in the lounge area next to an antique fireplace. The hotel is well located in the hostoric old town near to the cathedral and other tourist attractions and is surrounded by good restaurants and bars - Matelote/GinFish next door is unmissable, would also recommend a local jenever bar called Le Vagant - a cosy place with resident cat and about 300 choices of jenever. We drove to the hotel and found it surprisingly easy to find, there is no parking at the hotel but a number of public car parks nearby. We would definitely stay here again.

Having family in Belgium, we often visit Antwerp, but usually stay in the Hilton. On reading the Tripadvisor reviews for the Matelote and the fact it was my Birthday, we decided to give it a go.

We booked by email directly with the hotel. Peter was extremely helpful and we booked a suite.

The room was fantastic - a large living area, with big TV and music system, desk, wardrobes etc. The blinds were all electric and the lighting was well thought out with romance in mind! The bathroom was huge with a tub big enough for two and a separate shower. There are free (soft) drinks in the minibar and tea / coffee facilities.

We were there during the hottest weekend of the year so far. The room did have air-conditioning but it's not the big freeze your socks off American type air-con. More of a making the air temperature comfortable enough to sleep type of air-con. We were quite happy.

On the second day we came back to the room and found a bottle of bubbly in the room from Peter and his team for my Birthday. It was really appreciated!!!! We had also asked him to make a reservation at Gin Fish for us. Again, he had told them it was my Birthday and I got a special treat with dessert.

I really can't say anything bad about this hotel. It's not full service but it's location right in the middle of the old town means it doesn't need to be - numerous bars and restaurants are just outside the front door. Apart from Gin Fish we'd recommend Roode Hoed and Appelmans.

The only one minor point would be that to access our room (and two others) you had to climb a small spiral staircase. This didn't pose us any problems but I would have struggled to get my case up there if I had travelled alone. If you have problems with stairs then please check with the hotel first!

We shall definitely use the Matelote the next time we are back in Antwerp which should hopefully be very soon.

Just back from our 3 night stay in Matelote. Great contemporary hotel in superb location. The owner Peter & his wife really went out of their way to make our stay enjoyable. The room we stayed in was clean & very original.

I would definately recommend this hotel. It's location is unbeatable & unique style refreshing. Also check out the Lantern coffee shop opposite the hotel.

I had read several great reviews of this hotel on tripadvisor so was disappointed in my experience. First the room was actually quite small and unfortunately not very clean particularly the concrete floors. My feet were covered in dirt from walking around. Second, the room was at the top of a very small winding staircase and there was no offer to help us carry our bags. Finally, the room itself was directly above the receptionist area and there is virtually no soundproofing in the rooms so it was quite loud. Based on what I read in other reviews, perhaps we just had unfortunate rooms. So I'd suggest you request to not have the rooms at the top of the staircase and maybe your experience will be quite different. The location is excellent within walking distance to wonderful sites.

We stayed one night in this small design hotel in Antwerpen in late May 2007. This newly opened hotel is very centrally located with a two minute walk to the Grote Markt. The 10 individually modern designed rooms score high on the design scale, clean lines in soft, muted white, grey and chocolate colours makes for relaxing rooms.

The hotel's public areas are spacious but still keeping touches of the 16 century building with minimalist styled new furniture. The lounge room has a wood fire.

Our chic second floor room (medium priced at 145 euroes/night) faced the street which meant it suffered from some noise at night and was a little too warm and stuffy. The airco supplied didn't seem to cool it sufficiently. All rooms are fitted with a centrally controlled sound system giving access to nice mixed music (options of relaxed jazz, radio and lounge music).

Breakfast is served at the restaurant Gin-Fish (10 euro/person) two doors up from the hotel. We didn't have breakfast there but we had a four coursed evening meal at this this Michelin starred restaurant where you have the option to have the food created in front of you at the chef's kitchen table.

We have just returned from staying at the Matelote in Antwerp, and I was moved to write immediately! I am not sure where even to start, as our stay was simply fantastic. Firstly on arrival we were greeted at the door by one of the owners, and taken through a very stylish lobby to the reception. We were immediately told that we were being upgraded, which was very exciting for us. When I said 'Thank you, today is my husbands birthday, and you've made it even better', we were upgraded again to the White Room. I hesitate to tell this, as I don't want to create expection of immediate upgrades for everyone, but it does illustrate the kindness and generosity of the hotel owners. We were then shown to our room, which was stylish, enormous and extremely comfortable. The room consisted of huge bed, a large sofa for watching the TV, a enormous bathroom with extra deep bath and rain fall shower. The bedroom had enormous windows that opened to a lovely inner courtyard. We also had an integrated sound system, that piped wonderful relaxing music (of your choice) throughout the room. The hotel also has free internet connection and they provide free soft drinks in your room (which I've never come across in any hotel).
I can't recommend this hotel enough. If you are ever travelling through Antwerp, forget the big chain hotels and stay here instead! It is wonderfully centrally located, it's stylish in the extreme, and the owners are just lovely. We are already planning to come back for our anniversary.
