“Incredible Boutique Hotel!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 23, 2013

I stayed at the Hotel Julien for two nights in August 2013 and we simply had a wonderful stay. The location is perfect (a block from the Cathedral square). The hotel is super stylish and elegant. The decoration using iconic design is fantastic. The hotel has beautifully integrated other space from the original design making it a true original. The rooms themselves are very creatively designed and the bed was ultra comfortable. The staff is super helpful and friendly. I highly recommend staying there and would stay again if I am back in Antwerp.
A few tips:
a) do not be fooled by the simple looking door facing the street. The book is definitively not the cover.
b) the hotel is on a street with a tramway so you need to be efficient if arriving by car.
c) make sure to enjoy a drink from the roof of the hotel. Wonderful view!

We adore this hotel for three reasons: 1. Design. The hotel was transformed from two old mansions joined together. It still have a lot of original characters with courtyards and interesting dimensions. The interior is mostly done with mid-century modern that wed thoughtfully with the original space, decorated with authentic classic furniture designs, contemporary art photographs and volumes of books on art and design. It was done with tremendous taste and an understated elegance. Our room was very spacious, with high ceiling and a massive bathroom. Feels rather palatial. 2. Location. Right in the old town center, 3 mins walk to Grotemarkt, yet it is on a quiet street where not a lot of tourists passing through. 3. Great service. The ladies in the front desk are all very helpful and efficient. The pre-arrival service was also excellent with special notes regarding our toddler son because certain rooms have no elevator etc. They ended up upgrading us to a even bigger room upon arrival.

Brilliant weekend getawy for shopping, seeing friends, and eating. The hotel is bang in the center behind a big door that you are buzzed into. We were lucky to get Room 28 with a private terrace. Fab! If arriving by car, be prepared to unload in 30 seconds, there is a tram line that passes in front of the hotel on a narrow street. The staff is friendly and quirky, but professional and calm. The building is lovingly and tastefully restored. Bar is a bit dead, but plenty of cafés and bars nearby. Breakfast is great.

I've visited this small hotel just a short time after opening and was keeping an excellent memory of this first stay. I remembered a very special place, superbly designed with an very warm service provided to all the customers of the 11 rooms.

Things changed with an extension just recently turning the capacity from 11 to 21 rooms. Actually, I'll do not complain about the addition of 10 superb rooms, much larger and much more comfortable than the original ones.

Last week, I've decided to bring my parents to a short week end in Antwerp and for me, there wasn't any other choice than to stay at Julien cause had a great opinion of this hotel. Have we been satisfied? More or less. If room 28 (Experience room) was charming, very well decorated , comfortable and opening on a huge terrace overlooking the roof tops of Antwerp, the room 4 (Dreamer room) located in the original building was a bit oppressing overlooking a wall full of green vegetation but still a wall, with no space to relax and just very uncomfortable (a wood ground nice but too noisy, i guess the room upstairs has the same since I've been disturbed by noise; no proper blind curtains meaning I've been awake at 5.30am by the light which is one of the wrongest point for me; water pressure too little to enjoy a nice energetic shower). What a shame I didn't go for two Experience rooms cause really the room 28 is recommendable and can provide a WOW impression even to the most discerned travelers. So if you decide to go to Julien, just think about "Experience rooms" cause the extra few euros are really worth it.

Also, I have to say the service should be improved.People who are working at Julien are nice but only one or two persons for 21 rooms, it's not enough and it can affects on the atmosphere. Several times there was nobody behind the front desk, just the phone and a little panel saying "in case of needs, contact...", a bit weird. Consequently, this hotel looks a bit naked, without the warm atmosphere and it's regrettable cause would be so easy with these little charming lounges, this beautiful bar, this rooftop terrace overlooking the city but regretfully, it seems a bit empty and without life.

Maybe the management of Julien could think about a few changes like including in the room packages a complimentary cocktail or glass of wine at the bar which could be not only positive for a warmer atmosphere but positive as well for their incomes; placing fresh fruits or a few fresh flowers on arrival...

However, one thing which is absolutely amazing is the breakfast... impeccable, offering very great quality dishes, superbly presented in a lovely room. Croissants and bread were warm, cold cuts very fresh and yummy, some organic cereals, freshly squeezed juice... For 15 Eur, it's almost incredible and missing this exquisite moment would be a mistake. We just adore this moment.

To conclude, let's say Julien can become a great escape and has an incredible potential to become one of the most charming urban hotel in Europe but before it a few things have to be improved and I'm sure the management will do its utmost to go on this way.

This is a great little hotel. Super stylish. The lounge area is spectacular. Our room was one of the smallest available (for a double), nicely decorated, super high ceilings, big windows. We did not try their breakfast (15 euros).

The only reason that I did not give this hotel was the price. Kind of expensive for what you get.

Step through the non-descript metal door into a haven of tranquillity that puts the discerning traveller first. A carefully converted historical building in the centre of Antwerp that enhances and shows off the period features to make you feel you are the guest of a city merchant rather than a commercial hotel. Bare stone walls and towering ceilings combined with water and light that give a sense of space and peace unparalleled in Antwerp. Public rooms are unique and the open doors, open bar, magazines, flowers and furnishing enhance the private home feel. The bedroom is carefully designed with features and quirks like the wide wooden bench the length of the room that served as a seat, luggage rack, shelf and anything else guests might want to perform there. Bed is large with quality linen and the bathroom is simple, spacious and clean with an industrial shower that makes the scalp tingle with joy. As if the property and furnishings are not enough then the young staff are the crowning glory delivering service that catered so unobtrusively to my unspoken needs that I assume they must be telepathic.
