“I spent many hours exploring the instruments in the Vleeshuis”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 21, 2013

So yes, the title of the Vleeshuis is a bit misleading - no longer anything having to do with butchers, this is now the best museum of musical instruments I've ever seen!

Make sure to get the audio guide when you walk in! Listening to the many audio clips of the instruments you see in the display cases enriches the experiences a hundred-fold!

From Medieval through the 19th century periods, they have everything from Zinks to Contrabassoons, and many with audio clips to enlighten you as to how they sound when featured in first-rate music. Also, some cool musical curiosities, like the Guidonian hand, with a woman singing all the different hexachords. Don't know what I'm talking about? Get to the Vleeshuis and you will find out!

“Hidden gem for musicians”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed February 11, 2013

Although it is still situated in the center of Antwerp, this museum doesn't attract the hordes of visitors like Rubenshuis. In the old butchers' hall you will find a fine collection of old musical instruments, in the basement there is an exposition of how church bells are made. They set up a workshop there, so you can follow the whole bell making process. Check out the concerts. There are lunch concerts and evening concerts. Sometimes the old instruments are played during a concert.

“fabulous”
5 of 5 stars Reviewed August 28, 2012

The highlight of our trip to this city. Looks stunning from the outside & houses a fascinating collection of instruments through the ages. We were given a free audioguide with our tickets; it has text about the exhibits & you can listen or enjoy video as you tour the displays. We had well over 2 1/2 hours here & I'd recommend it to all lovers of historical music. There's also a wonderful display of bells and how they're made.

“Ok”
3 of 5 stars Reviewed May 27, 2012

The museum was ok, but I think there are a lot better museums (like MAS and MOMU) in Antwerp. So if you come for a short visit this is certainly not a must.
