“Easter Service & More”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 4, 2013

We had the opportunity to go to Easter services. What a thrill, the bells, music from the pipe organ, choir and with the Bishop officiating!!! The Mass was in Dutch, BUT we easily followed along.
The paintings of Ruben along with the beauty of the cathedral's architecture and stain glass windows was breath taking. There is a fee to tour the Cathedral. However, if you go to a service you can go in early or stay later for your own semi private tour.

“Bells pealing Easter morning”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 2, 2013 via mobile

Beautiful cathedral. Best part was being in the square Easter morning when all the bells started ringing and ringing and ringing, for about 20 minutes.

“Don't miss the Rubens paintings!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 29, 2013

A famous destination for lovers of Rubens paintings, as well as Japanese tourists who flock in to see the place where Nello died in the arms of his faithful dog. It was news to me that "The Dog of Flanders" is required reading in Japan! An amazing experience to visit here and talk to so many different people drawn here for a variety of reasons.

“What makes it unique”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

They say, if you have seen one church, you’ve seen them all. Well, don’t believe it, that’s not true! They are totally different in different countries and even in different cities of the same country. Different in style, colour, content, atmosphere and so on. What makes De Kathedraal in Antwerp unique is, first of all, canvases of Rubens. That’d be strange not to see his works in the city which worships its best-known painter. Three works were made by him specially for this church, including tremendous altarpieces, Assumption of the Virgin among them. This is a beautiful place which “tells a story of glory and prosperity – and even more so one of sorrow and disaster”, as Father of the Cathedral says in the pamphlet. If you visit this as well as Rubens’ House, you will have a clear view of his years spent in Antwerp.

“A gothic landmark”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 11, 2013

The extraordinary spire of the cathedral still dominates the city of Antwerp, an amazing survivor of wars and revolutions. The interior is calm an uplifting and contains two great Rubens triptychs which are among the greatest works of the age of Baroque. Must sees.
