“A must-see in Antwerp”
Reviewed November 19, 2012

Don't leave Antwerp without seeing the Cathedral of Our Lady. It is a beautiful building with some seriously good artwork inside. When I went there, there was a beautiful exhibition on, that on its own was worth coming for. It was a bit messy inside due to restoration work (that's why I didn't give it excellent rating), but these things have to be done from time to time. A part from the famous paintings, there are some amazing wood works to be seen - really impressive. The story behind the cathedral is unique and part of what makes it so interesting, so make sure to read about that when you go there. The museum shop is one of the better ones, so worth spending a few minutes in on the way out (they have very interesting books). The staff were very friendly and, I noticed, kind and patient with my old mother who does not speak English - I appreciated that!

“Magnificent building housing many a Reubens”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

I usually have a problem with paying to go into a church, however if you look at it as an art gallery housing some of the best artists work of their era, then you will find the value.
Peter Paul Reubens, Artus Quellinus, Frans Floris, Frans Franken etc
Apart from the art work, this is a beautiful church in the gothic style, and it still remains a house of Prayer.

“Large and Light”
Reviewed November 17, 2012

I am not an expert on churches but I do like to look. This cathedral is large but there seem to be windows all over the place filtering light into all the corners. There seemed to be a huge amount of restoration work ongoing in the cathedral which made it rather difficult to access all areas without scaffolding blocking the way. There are some lovely features to see and the more recently installed of the organ pipes, whilst looking stunning, seem to have harmony with the older more established fixtures and fittings. I think the five euro entrance fee is steep but it is on a par with other similar places. I do believe churches should have donations and not charge admission.

you would not want to go to Antwerp and not see this beautiful gothic cathedral. It has lots of artwork such as Rubens.

“First thing in Antwerp”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

This is one of the most famous buildings of Antwerp. The Gothic Cathedral was under construction during 2 centuries, starting in the XIV century and finishing around 1520. Never finished, it has currently only one large tower, not two as was in the original project. The tower is still the tallest church tower in Belgium and the Netherlands region. Three Rubens masterpieces are shown inside. Check the opening time: the church is open for tourists just 5 hours every day. All the area is very nice, the Grote Markt (Grand-Place), next to the Cathedral, worth visiting too.
