you would not want to go to Antwerp and not see this beautiful gothic cathedral. It has lots of artwork such as Rubens.

This is one of the most famous buildings of Antwerp. The Gothic Cathedral was under construction during 2 centuries, starting in the XIV century and finishing around 1520. Never finished, it has currently only one large tower, not two as was in the original project. The tower is still the tallest church tower in Belgium and the Netherlands region. Three Rubens masterpieces are shown inside. Check the opening time: the church is open for tourists just 5 hours every day. All the area is very nice, the Grote Markt (Grand-Place), next to the Cathedral, worth visiting too.

It took 400 years or so to get this masterpiece together.

Architecture is stunning but the internal paintings including Rubens' masterpieces [eg Descent from the Cross] create an awesome atmosphere.

One of Europe's greatest Cathedrals. Miss it at your peril

The number of magnificent works here is staggering & with so much beauty around, the experience is breath-taking. I walked in when Mass was being conducted & when the choristers started singing, it felt like Heaven.
This church is a must.

It was a bit messy in the otherwise majestic Cathedral due to lots of renovations going on, lots of scaffoldry around. Really nice exhibition of the triptyches by Rubens, van Eyk, Matsijs and others. The main altarpiece is also fantastic.

A lot of value was added for us by an impromptu conversation with a guy in civilian dress who appeared to work in the church - he told us about the north-south golden line which is engraved in the floor with copper ...eand enlightened by a small whole in the painted glazing to show when it is Easter (somewhat similar to the rose line in the Da Vinci Code). Also told us about the history of Napoleon who used the church as a stable and had all the marble grave stones thrown outside, which were put back into place somewhat randomly later.
