Owner description: Leopold II had this unusual rail station built as a neo-Baroque monument to the railway age in 1905.

the outside of the building looks rather old, but beautiful, but the inside of the building is very modern, except for the entrance of the old building. The trainstation has four levels and lights were placed in such a way that is has a nice effect. As far as trainstations go, this is one of the most beautiful I have seen, really worth a visit if you visit Antwerp.

The central station of Antwerp is considered as our second cathedral. In the '80 ties the government thought of demolishing it, but there was such a huge protest: many people, artists, architects, local people joined forces to stop this mad idea. There were popular balls and concerts in the main hall. Luckily, a new plan was made and it was decided to open it up so that trains could pass through on the lower levels. It is a very ingeneous plan, and it was a challenge to keep the whole of the building upright and to prevent the enormous dome from collapsing when all the drilling for the tunnels started. As a commuter I am frequent visitor of the central station and I always feel quite happy to arrive in this beautiful building that stands as precious monument for the city to keep for many more years.

Locals call the Antwerp central station the railway cathedral. Rightly so! It was renovated a couple of years ago to accomodate trains passing through it, as it used to be an end station. They also wanted to be ready for the high speed trains (and the international travellers on them) linking Antwerp to Amsterdam and Paris. The renovation managed to maintain the authentic and beautiful outlook of the building while at the same time making it a state-of-the-art facility for travellers. It has everything they want to cater for (shops, tourist information desk, metro access, parking space for cars and bikes, rent-a-bike, even a Starbucks). The buffet/waiting space is currently undergoing a major refurbishment which promises to hold on to its art deco aura. In short the Railway cathedral is well worth a visit, even if you don't intend to travel!

After its renovation the station has turned into a real attraction. Can you believe it was destined to get demolished in the 80's courtesy of our then Minister of Traffic Herman De Croo? More than few people opposed ...
Also don't forget to visit the modern part inside.
