“Great Art, Great Small Setting...But Very Crowded”
Review of Rockox House

With the major museum closed for renovations, a nice selection of their works is now housed in this lovely small museum. Unfortunately, I ended up there when there were several large tour groups visiting. The museum has alarms all over the place which are motion detectors and they kept going off as the tour groups would crowd into rooms or get too close to the art work. It became very distracting and because the museum is small, it's quite hard to avoid the tour groups by getting ahead of them or lagging behind (tried both, but with several groups, it was impossible). Perhaps there is a better time of day to visit when you can avoid the crowds, because overall the historic setting and the art are fantastic.

This is a small-but-perfectly-formed museum that was the house of the Mayor of Antwerp when Rubens was active. It shows beautiful architecture, amazing art, and exudes style and comfortable wealth, without being over the top/flashy. It comprises just 4 rooms so is a quick visit, but one that is strongly recommended and is an excellent complement to the Rubens House showing how the well off lived and what their taste in art was.

Hidden away on a small street not far from the main square, this is a little gem.

At the time of writing, the Antwerp Museum Of Fine Arts Is Closed. However, nils desperandum; the cream of the crop is being shown at the Rockox.

This is a fine gallery and, obviously, Mr Rockox, (who was around in the late 15th/early 16th century) had exquisite taste, particularly towards painting and applied art from his home turf (I wasn't familiar with the work of Franz Snidjers before, but what a great painter of still life pieces). In addition to the paintings (and a fine free guide book) there is a little film theatre, where the curators talk about The Golden Cabinet, which is really illuminating.

My only gripe is that I have never been in such as security conscious museum. Maybe it is because they are hosting some of the Museum of Fine Art's stuff, but get within about two foot of a painting and off goes the alarm. The first time it happens you nearly have a heart attack, but when it keeps happening it just gets plain annoying. The security guards must be used to it as they don't turn a hair.

Apart from that, a top place.

This is an amazing museum which has something for everyone. Rubens has a presence and the collection of paintings, furniture, curios will please a jaded palate. There is a lovely garden area.

One for the diary - UK August Bank holiday Sunday is Culture Day. Free entrance to all Museums & Galleries. The Rockox House was real gem of a find. The Guide Book was a handy size and was one of the most informative and best produced I have seen. Everything was nice about this place. Friendly, informative staff made this one of the best little gallery/museums I have been to. A MUST see.
