My friends and I visited the Pierre Marcolini shop today, after having enjoyed a box of his chocolates a few weeks ago (bought from the Eurostar departures lounge).

The ground floor shop was nice to browse around and the coffee shop upstairs is small but quiet and stylish. After our tea and cake we went back downstairs and were asked if we needed help and were given lots of time and help from a very enthusiastic gentleman who talked us through the selections and even let us try a few. It was great fun, we loved it.

I cannot recommend these chocolates enough, they are a total delight; interesting, diverse and delicious. So, so good. We don't rush them or wolf them down (I never thought I'd say that about chocolates!), we savour them and identify the tastes and textures and are constantly amazed. The macaroons are also divine...

Definitely pop in and have a coffee or tea and a cake and then treat yourself to a box of chocolates. It's not cheap but it is great quality and absolutely worth it.

I first visited Marcolini in Brussels some years ago and have been a fan ever since.
There are some, myself included, who would argue that Marcolini makes the best chocolates in the world. See also http://www.economist.com/node/3930436.

Genius is something very difficult to define and even harder to measure, but in my opinion Marcolini is a genius. I take chocolate very seriously and have a fair amount of experience. Very pure chocolate can taste like sawdust and if on the other hand you start introducing additives, you tend to ruin the purity of the taste and texture. Marcolini get it right, both in the pure chocolates and in the pralines, truffles etc., in which the tastes and nuances are both exceedingly tasty and at the same time refined and well balanced.

The store in Antwerp is defined as a tea room, but I must admit that the tea (and coffee) didn't really interest me. It is very impressively fitted out and the presentation of the chocolates is a work of art in its own right.

If you like chocolate and appreciate the genuinely good stuff, then Marcolini is an absolute must. Even if you don't(???!!!), it is still worthwhile visiting.
