The location is good, the room was large enough, the staff was friendly, the breakfast was included and very good. That part was fine. What made it a difficult stay is that there was no plug in the bathroom, the pillows were pretty bad, the hairdryer was useless, and the light in the room was so awful that there was no possibility of reading after dark. Since we went in winter, it was dark by 4:30 and still dark at 8:30 in the morning. In fact, I tried to iron a pair of slacks and the ironing board is attached to a wall. I had to run in the bathroom to use its light, look for the wrinkles, come out, press the pants blindly, run back in the bathroom, look for more wrinkles..... it got old. I have above the shoulder hair, but the hairdryer was old and very weak and took a good 20 minutes to dry. Although those seem like petty annoyances, they were a pain to deal with when we were pressed for time; trying to read whether for business or pleasure was difficult - easy fixes perhaps, but quite annoying for the 3 nights we were there. For those reasons, I just wouldn't be able to recommend this hotel. I think there are better options in Antwerp.

This hotel has been our homebase for three times when visiting Antwerp. Our main reason is that this hotel offers good value for money. It's located near close to shoppingstreets and lot's of restaurants and bars (our favorite: Spaghettiworld, Oude Koornmarkt 66). Next to the hotel is the Arenberg Parking house, but keep in mind that this parking opens at sundays at 18:00! We always park in the 'Stadsschouwburg'-parking house only a few steps away.

Rooms are different in size and decoration. We've stayed in smaller old furnished rooms and larger newly decorated rooms. Breakfast is ok with all the usual stuff.

Stayed here for three nights with a group of friends for a City Break and was initially sceptical after reading the previous reviews. Shouldn't have been at all as the hotel was fine and suited for our purpose. The hotel foyer was welcoming, with the staff very friendly and attentive. The rooms were of a fair size, and the bathroom ample as well. There was an air conditioning switch which was connected to the light switch panel, but if you didnt want that the window opened easily. The room was serviced daily, and the white fluffy towels were plentiful. When we requested an Iron and Ironing board it was delivered immediately. We did have to chase up tea making equipment and a couple of our party didn't get a kettle at all.The mini bar was well enough stocked, but you didn't really need it as the beer in Antwerp is fantastic, and bars are a plenty. The breakfast was plentiful with the usual range of cereals, cold meats and fruit as you would find on the continent, along with lots of cheeses. The hot breakfast consisted of bacon, sausage, scrambled and boiled eggs. We did not eat in the hotel restaurent in the evening so we cannot comment on the quality. The location of the hotel is great, about 10 minutes walk to the main square and just around the corner from the theatre. Lots to do in Antwerp, which is steeped in history and blessed with excellent beer and top food. A really good place to visit with this hotel being situated well for it's guests to enjoy it.

We (family of 4) stayed one Saturday night in this hotel. After having asked for two neighbouring rooms on booking, we did get two rooms with consecutive room numbers, but on separate sides of the staircase. The worst was the location of the rooms within the complex of buildings: The windows (not sound proof!) opened directly - on the same level - to the top floor of a multi-storey car park - which was extremely noisy late in the night.
Some points about this hotel are quite OK: the location within the city, the room size. The breakfast was quite standard. So, if you can avoid 1st floor rooms facing the car park, you might find the hotel acceptable. However, the front desk staff we met was extremely indifferent and unhelpful.

I stayed a week here with a friend and we were both very satisfied with this hotel.
Compared to some places I have been this one was really nice with large clean rooms and cosy furniture. Even for two females sharing a bathroom it was spacious one :)
We didn't spend much time sitting in the hotel room, but after the day and a few times a night too out on town this was a good place to come and get some sleep.
Location was good and for the price we paid we were very happy with this hotel.

Stayed one night at the Theater hotel. The hotel is a pretty average hotel in central in central Antwerpen near the birds' market (Sundays).

The huge rooms we got looked like they had recently been updated with new wallpaper in the actual bedroom, however, the bathroom still has dated fixtures and very old hair driers (very slow).

Beds are very big and comfortable. In the room there is also a desk, loveseat and chair.

Breakfast must often be busy as there is a notice in the bedrooms stating that you may have to wait in the lobby. The breakfast food is adequate, noting special, but also nothing wrong with it.

Would stay again, if at the same good price (90/euro for a double room).

The Theater Hotel was the main conference hotel for a congress which I attended in Antwerp in September 2007. We made and paid in full for our booking in April.
On arriving at the hotel after 10pm in the evening, worn out after a full day's travel from Hong Kong to Brussels via Helsinki and on to Antwerp (obviously not the hotel's fault), we were advised that there was not a room available, despite it having been paid for 5 months earlier, which was explained on the basis that over-booking and re-sale of rooms is common in the hotel industry.
The hotel managers, present nearby at the hotel's bar, were not interested in our plight, and left a young and very obliging reception clerk to deal with us, which she did to the best of her ability. An unsatisfactory "alternative" room was arranged, in a building well removed from central Antwerp, and nowhere near the congress venues and transport, so we made our own arrangements for the rest of our stay.
The only positive coming out of our experience was discovering the Hyllit Hotel in central Antwerp, to which we relocated and in which we found first class accommodation from every point of view. Given that, we did not take up later offers from the Theater Hotel through our travel agent of an upgraded room for the balance of our stay.

Stayed: September 2007
