Theater Hotel
Ranked #23 of 73 Hotels in Antwerp
Reviewed May 30, 2012

We have just returned from a weekend break in Antwerp, we stayed at the Theater Hotel and Outstanding is the only way to describe it. We arrived quite late on Friday evening to find that our mini-bus wouln't fit into the multi-storey car park, Carolina on reception immediately rang around and found us a local car park and got somebody to open it up for us!!!! The rooms were large, and spotlessly clean. The beds were enormous and extremely comfortable and the towels changed both days we were there. The bathroom was large and very clean, there was a TV, mini bar, hairdryer and trouser press in the room. One of our friends phoned down to reception to ask if they could borrow an iron and within minutes an iron and ironing board were brought to the room. We stayed bed and breakfast and the food was second to none. There was an enormous choice, all cooked freshly. The dining room was air conditioned and spacious, again spotlessly clean and with plenty of staff on hand at all times. The bar was reasonably priced and the bar area comfortable.

The hotel is well situated, all parts of the city were within easy walking distance. Maps are freely available from reception and the staff with give any advice or directions needed. I would recommend this hotel to anyone staying in Antwerp as it is excellent value for money and a delight to stay in. I only wish we had been there longer.

This hotel is located in Antwerp's city centre - railwaystation, cathedral, etc can be reached on foot, and shopping starts just outside. This is an older hotel, which you can still see in corridors, elevators etc, but my room had been very nicely renovated with new furniture, flatscreen, trouser press... Good quality - business-style. Bathroom (and room in general) was very clean - good quality without being overly chic. This came at a very attractive price.
Important for me: I was able to sleep with open windows. Finally some good bedside reading lights as well!
Good choice for breakfast, including fresh fruit, hot food, and good bread, and the service during breakfast was good - coffee served in no time. Friendly and efficient reception staff.

This is the kind of place I will return to when on business. All you need from a hotel without paying a fortune.

Used this hotel as a base for a weekend break. The corridors are rather claustrophobic, rooms simple and clean, dated bathrooms but a good breakfast.

Pro:
- Central location, few minutes walk away from the Rubenshuis, Meir and Groenplaats. Next to the hotel is the Stadsshowburg and square where on Sunday's the Vogeltjesmarkt (market) takes place.
- Public Parking Arensberg has a indoor connection with the hotel. Take your parking ticket to the hotel and ask they add the reduced fee.
- Rooms ok, clean, not noisy (5th floor street facing), good pressure on the shower.
- Friendly staff

Cons:
Not much bad to say.
- Wifi is paid but not much (5 euro or so for 24H)

Neutral:
- Breakfast buffet was ok with good selection just the scrambled eggs were too soggy.

My City Tips:
- Vlaamse Kaai and Waalse Kaai for great restaurants
- Near Kloosterstraat area are great design, vintage and antique shops
- Visit het Mas museum with great panorama from the roof. Good for all ages.

This hotel, formally known as the Alfa Theater, now just the Theater Hotel, is located, not unsurprisingly, in the shadow of the very impressive new theatre in the middle of Antwerp. It's location makes it ideal for walking around the very beautiful old town and Cathedral Square.

There is an adequate multi storey car park attached to the hotel with a door on the 1st floor leading directly into the hotel reception. This is paid for separately, but if you give your ticket to the reception they can arrange for the guest discount rate.

This is not a large hotel. The reception area has adequate seating for guests waiting or relaxing, and a small bar area. Also on this level is the breakfast room which is also the evening dining room. More of which later. As is the custom in Belgium English is widely spoken so no problem there.

Your room key is needed to operate the lifts to the guest floors. The rooms at the front face the street and the accommodation opposite, while at the back you overlook that car park. The windows have heavy curtains which make the room pitch black even in daylight hours. Very good for those who choose to sleep in in the mornings.

Rooms are of good repair, clean, and well equipped. The usual flat screen TV with channels from around Europe available, internet access, mini bar, security box, even a heated trouser press. The bathroom is clean and bright and offers all the soaps and shampoo you would need. The shower is strong and provides water at an unvarying temperature.

Beds are large, and firm. Very much to my liking. Combined with the darkness of the rooms it has always ensured that I have a good night's sleep here.

The breakfast is both hot or cold, with friendly service from the staff. In the evening this area becomes the restaurant. Now over the years the quality of the food did vary, but recently, while the menu is small, I have been very impressed by the quality of the meat served. Something they are rightly proud of. I have not eaten finer. A hugh compliment to them. Not what you expect from an hotel restaurant.

This is another hotel I revisit as my choice when in the area. It does not have the glitz of the large chain hotels, but offers comfort and convenience with the added bonus of those great steaks!

Fine Hotel in the middle of the center of Antwerp.
Breakfast is ok, a pity there is a surcharge for the espresso.
The bar has not a strict closing policy, so if its cosy they will stay open late.
