Went to "De Kaai" with my wife last week.

Location; this is in Boom ( Antwerp ) - next to the river "De Rupel" - The location is modern, grand & impressive. There is a lot of glass indoors, so you have always a nice view. Be sure in to ask in the summer for a place outdoor, next to the water.

Service; 2 waiters are serving all the tables. They are very friendy, know what food & wines they serve. And are always looking for enhancing details. So this is more than ok.

Food; It is "bristo" food in a new jacket. We ordered tapas, carpaccio, boullabaise and steak. Tapas where worth the price; a big plate with loempias, chicken, sauses and other fingerfood. Perfect! But the rest... Carpaccio was soso; Meat was ok, only bland vinigar & the parmezan was not the real stuff. The bouillabaise was small but ok. The steak was... just a steak. A large piece of meat smacked down on the plate with a bit of green salad.

Price; A starter costs 14 - 18 euro A meal costs around 20 - 25 euro - Dessert around 8 a 10 euro. Everything is overpriced for what you get.

Wine; Smaller wine selection, but the waiters know how to sell it. The house wines are young & quite sweet.

Price & General conclusion; Way to expensive! We had a bill over the 120 euro. Yust for food that you can prepare at home. We where very disappointed. If you like fine cuisine, ad 50 euros extra and go the "Pastorale" ( 2 star restaurant - 5 minute drive from the Kaai ).

We will come back but only for sitting at the water with a tapas plate. Know what to expect when you visit the Kaai; Nice location, good waiters, mediciore food & a very big bill... Be warned!

I respectfully disagree with some previous reviews. Ok, this is not a gastronomical restaurant, but a bistro-brasserie-lounge-terrace-tearoom, unique in its kind. The setting is wonderful, easy parking, beautiful views over the Scheldt river (and the sunsets!). The food is simple but decent. Not very cheap, ok, but not that expensive neither. Service is excellent.
Regarding the attitude of the staff, mentioned in some previous reviews: these people have their pride. If you treat them as equals, if you engage in a normal conversation instead of giving orders, you will get the best possible service. I suppose these waiters have become somewhat allergic to arrogant behavior of snobs whose source of income is mostly unknown by the Ministry of Finances, and who come to show off their Porsche before or after some other posh event. They have become allergic to French or English speaking clients who simply do not know that it is a form of elementary politeness to apologize to locals if you do not speak their language. They have become allergic to rich Eastern European 'visitors'.
So, dear fellow reviewers, if you have the feeling that staff is not friendly enough: try to understand what they sometimes have to endure. Give them a smile, a compliment, some sign of interest and recognition: you will see what you get ... perhaps more than you expected ....

After visiting the new Antwerp museum "MAS", we were looking for a nice place to eat nearby. We crossed the street and entered restaurant De Kaai, which has a fantastic location near the river Schelde. Unfortunately, this is the only positive point of this restaurant. We actually went there several times in about a year and each time, we were disappointed about the food (overpriced in relation to the quality) and most of all by the very arrogant and unfriendly staff. This time again, we were hardly given a look and offered a table in a doorway, while there were several other free tables. We asked to sit near the window but all we got was a no from a grumpy waiter. We left and went for another place. This was definitely the last time we will ever go to that restaurant again.

Unique sit-down view of the Schelde - especially at sunset - draws many locals. They certainly weren't there for the beef or ribs - but none of our party had the popular mussels.

the best thing about this place is the location, right on the banks of de Schelde river, near the center and across the new MAS museum. It's a big, roomy place with a sort of 'trendy' design but not really that comfortable nor convincing. The terrace is lovely though and there is free parking but that's where the good news ends.
When we arrived late afternoon on a sunny mid-weekday, the terrace was only half full. The other half was 'reserved' according to a grumpy waitress. She was not only grumpy but downright unpleasant. When we left one hour later, the 'reserved' tables were still empty...
The service in general in this restaurant is very bad, miserable looking people working... The food was of poor quality, mediocre as are the wines.
A bad experience, not to be repeated.
