The Memorial statue is in front of the Cathedral, easy to find and the works were finished. If you’ll visit during the morning, the place is not so crowded and you can admire it.

Literally a very large smooth statue of a boy and his dog sleeping under a cobblestone blanket literally dwarfed me in size.

It's crafted after a British story called "A Dog of Flanders" by Marie Louise de la Ramée. She wrote the story after witnessing child labour and animal abuse in Belgium. The story is supposed to have happened in the Antwerp sub-city Hoboken.

Not many people in in Flanders nor Antwerp/Hoboken knew the story until it was noticed that many people (really busses full) came looking for the statue as the story is extremely popular in Japan.

One of those unexpected moments.

The statue is ok but the surrounded area I do not feel nice how the stones surrounded the statue are, doesn’t show gratitude to the Japanese from which they got the statue and made the connection between Hoboken and Antwerp
Also most guides in Antwerp do not know the exact story about it , would advice to Antwerp city that they let read the original English novel are at least see the Japanese cartoon so they understand the story before they explain it to the visitors

The story about a young boy and his dog is touching, and the English version was used as a junior reader for many years in Japan. The memorial is located close to the Cathedral and was funded by the Toyota Corporation. It is a good photo opportunity and popular with walking tour groups.

This is a very cute statue, very inventive and well integrated into the local environment. I just wish people would stop climbing over it. Just admire guys! You don’t have to stand on it or sit on it.
