“Dining on the stars..”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 28, 2014

We had a business dinner and ordered the 10 course menu. The plates kept coming and coming and I must say that it does not happen often that I like everything on the menu, but this was really the case here. The best course was the truffle one. Amazing! Concerning the service, we had indeed also experienced a few things that gave us the feeling that there is still area to improve in this aspect. The sommelier was nice and even had time to chat with us on topics apart from wine. I enjoyed very much this evening and could definitely recommend to anyone seeking for a special night out!

“Huge disappointment”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 19, 2014

De Pastorale is over rated for a 2 star. The modern interior would have been nice but the choice of video (in plain sight of diners) of a close up of what looked like a dirty and disgusting looking blackish blue mouth is offensive. In general, the staff are unfriendly, cold, incompetent (slow, forgetful, too busy) and some are even pretentious. The food is nothing to write home about. Way too expensive for what you get ! I will not be back. The special show of the chef for dessert was so ridiculous we had to laugh. Sorry, I can't buy into this psuedo modern, minimalist, over rated but mostly hype pretention only to be served mediocre food by even more mediocre staff and then asked to pay to euros for that. Thumbs down.

“Pastorale”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2013

Don't get me wrong: they can cook (and cook well). However, the whole experience is let down by bad service. There is a lot of staff available but none of them are particularly helpfull. The hostess is indeed condescending, as others have noted. The sommelier will taste each wine but doesn't really offer any explanation on the wines.
The menu is full of hollow words and doesn't make any mention of what you're eating ("land" or "sea" is about as far as it goes). So it's up to the servers to explain what the different options are. Taking into account they're not very helpfull, you end up with food on your plate that leaves you guessing what you're eating. If you're into eating nice food (on the whole, some dishes do taste weird) while being snubbed and ignored, this is a good place.
It is a nice building, the garden is a bit full (shrubs everywhere) but OK. The interior is decorated with a wooden structure that has some graffiti on it. On the walls, there are tv monitors that show eyes. Maybe it's just me but thinking about eyeballs does ruin your appetite. So for me, it's a bit too much artsy-fartsy.
The food itself then. We had the biz lunch menu (60 €). They started with some finger food. Then there was some "snacks" for lack of better word. The entree was salmon. Main course was fish baked on the bone with potatoes and algae. We also had the cheese dish (fluffy cheese on gruyere followed by five different cheeses with 4 types of bread). If you have any appetite, do go for the cheese dish (it's another 11 €) if you don't want to leave hungy by the way. Dessert is a very acidic orange with white chocolate. At the end you get 5 or 6 pralines which are small desserts (cheesecake, dame blanche and some others).
All in all, it's not bad for the food but because of everything around it, I left disappointed (you literally really have to wave for the check because you'll be ignored otherwise).

“Good 2* restaurant, but the best”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 11, 2013

The exterior is an old house, but the interior is modern, which is a nice touch.
I personally like the TV playing art videos.

The food is good, which is normal in a 2* restaurant. I only hoped for more experimental preparations, but the chef really focuses on the pure taste of the product. The wine list on the other hand is a bible, all the different wines you can order.

The service isn't what I expected, not really personal or attentive. The waiters are too reserved and don't take the time for their costumers.

Overall an OK experience, not what I expected.

I am not sure that I will return to this place in the future.

“Mediocre and perhaps not worth 2 Michelin stars”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 4, 2013

My wife and grandparents had dinner at De Pastorale in November 2013.

We had high expectations due to the raving reviews and the fact that this restaurant is one of the only top-places in Belgium we had not yet visited.

The atmosphere is mediocre. Essentially, the place looks amazing and absolutely contemporary. However the waiting staff is not very engaging nor friendly. Finally, the hostess is rather condescending and not very flexible (for instance, as I usually do, I had ordered coffee BEFORE the arrival of my desert. This seemed to have shocked here while I find this very normal and I also find that whenever possible customer is king).

The food was generally well prepared. However, we ate a la carte and were offered dishes that had the size given in the full-scale tasting menu (ie. a bit too small for just two dishes). This was made up by ample bread, appetizers and miniardises but it does not justify the severely high price-tag (ie. some 125 euro's per person per meal (two courses) with no wine).
