Het Gebaar is a special gem in Antwerp! My husband and I have enjoyed this place for years and look forward to it every time we're in Belgium. Not only are Roger Van Damme's desserts worth the booking, his main dishes are equally superb...some of the best food and atmosphere in all of Europe!

The restaurant is located in an old house in the botanical garden, very stylish. Only open for lunch, reservation needed, although we were lucky, we tried anyway and they had a cancellation. Dishes are great, expect no molecular experts experiments, but classic dishes that are delicious. They have pairing wine by the glass. Price is high - you pay for the quality. Definitely worth a detour.

First, Het Gebaar only opens for lunch and early dinner as they close at 6pm. Their website has absolutely no English so if you can't read Dutch, I suggest you call the restaurant for a booking. If you are adventurous enough like I am with Google Translate, you can make a booking online.

They are apparently a Michelin star restaurant. It certainly looks and feels that way. More famous for its desserts and this was apparent when we were asked whether we were there at 2pm if it was for lunch or just desserts. Have never ever been asked that in a fine dining restaurant.

Again, if you run their menu through Google Translate, it is roughly about the same as what will be explained to you with the exception of items that might be missing from the website as is often the case with online menus.

Again, there is absolutely no English menu so everything is explained to you in perfect English. Perhaps they hardly ever get Dutch illiterate customers!

I suspect every item on the menu is cooked to perfection and I certainly had nothing but wonderful things to say about my belly of pork with its various ingredients. (See photo attached) The dessert is visually stunning and delightful to eat but I have seldom found desserts to be the star of the menu in fine dining restaurants. Although the chef is renown for his desserts, there is no hint of sinful indulgence and delight the way most of us feel with desserts. It is a stunning display of technique and artistry which must be applauded.

Service is excellent as what you might expect from Michelin or fine dining restaurants.

Our guide book mentioned this to be an excellent place for cakes. After a leisurely stroll we entered the restaurant (only open from lunch till 6 PM) around 4.30 PM. Mmmm, we felt like party crushers as all tables seemed to be finishing their lunch. However, the staff welcomed us very friendly, offered a chair and promised that we could be seated in 10 minutes and that they were happy to offer us cheese, cake, wine and whatever we wanted. We opted for a nice wine and decided to first share a cheese platter and then share a desert platter. Both platters were wonderfully decorated: we never had a cheese platter like this before. I think that this is a wonderful lunch place, but please, whenever walking around in Antwerp around 4 PM and in for cheese or cake, do take the effort to come here. Staff is friendly, place is wonderful and food is fantastic.
