Owner description: The monumental Gemeentemuseum Den Haag, designed by the architect H.P. Berlage in 1935, is perfect for wandering around in. It houses a varied collection and many changing exhibitions. You will find the world’s biggest collection of works by Piet Mondrian, the highlight being his last abstract work Victory Boogie Woogie, along with some of the finest works by artists of the Hague School, paintings by Picasso, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Monet, Toorop and many contemporary artists. Gemeentemuseum Den Haag also houses one of the biggest and best collections of Delftware.

“Wonderful collection of art”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 18, 2012

Worth the time and effort -- especially as it contains the most important paintings (such as Vermeer's "View of Delft" and Rembrandt's "The Anatomy Lesson of Dr. Tulp") from the Mauritzhuis while the latter is closed for renovation.

“Brilliant!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 16, 2012

Normally one hour in any gallery/museum is enough for me but I spent nearly three hours here. It's a beautiful building with a lot of architectural charm (as well as some idiosyncrasies) which contains what seems like quite a vast collection of artworks.
When I visited recently the main exhibition focused on art from The Hague from the 1940s to the 1960s, which was a wonderful and eye-opening collection from a range of artists, most of whom I knew nothing about. But definitely containing a lot of excellent work, which was very exciting to see.
The permanent collection is worth seeing on its own, with jaw-dropping works by Holbein the Younger, Rembrandt, Vermeer and many others. It goes right up to the present day with pieces on display by Bruce Nauman, Francis Bacon, and Anselm Kiefer, the last one with seeing on its own (for me, anyway).
Elsewhere in the building was a Bridget Reilly exhibition as well as a really good Mondrian/De Stijl display which includes the great artist last work (-in progress).
I suppose a map is useful - I didn't take one and so stumbled upon the various spaces through trial and error - but that was part of the fun.

“Art for all”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 22, 2012

The building that houses the Gemeentemuseum is an interesting sample of architecture and art in itself. And the collection of art is maybe the best of The Hague, particularly during these 4 or 5 years during which the Mauritshuis Museum will be closed to the public for renovation. The best paintings from the Mauritshuis Museum are on display at the Gemeentemuseum, except for the marvelous "Girl with a pearl earring" by Vermeer (who knows why). But the main collection of the museum is modern art, and the display is magnificent with painting, sculpture and installations. A temporary exhibit on the "Fabulous Fifties" fashion makes the visit worth.
