Owner description: The Louwman Museum is home to the world's oldest private collection of motor cars, compiled by two generations of the Louwman family. The museum dates back to 1934 and now comprises over two hundred and fifty antique and classic motor cars. Experts regard the collection as one of the most beautiful in the World. The museum exudes passion. Each car has its own story to tell, its own contribution to history. The motor car is a mirror of culture. The collection is housed in a purpose-built museum in The Hague, the city where P.W. Louwman established his Dodge and Chrysler import company. The building, designed by American architect Michael Graves, blends in sympathetically with its historic surroundings. The landscape gardens, designed by Lodewijk Baljon, complement the architecture of the building.

Took my father (a mobile 80+) but he still enjoyed the large museum. We had a break for lunch and then off we went again. A lot to see and maybe 3-4 hours in total but wasn't a strain.

For a change of pace the Louwman museum is an excellent alternative. Of course, the Louwman offers a look at vehicles through their history. But the depth and breadth of the collection is fascinating. The Louwman tries to provide something for everyone. From the first types of vehicles, automakers from around the globe, cars in movies, toy car collection, all types of race cars, three wheel vehicles and even motorcycles are just a few types of vehicles which can be seen at the Louwman Auto museum. My favorites were the motorcycles and micro-cars. I think most people would enjoy this museum.

My eight-year old loves cars and was thrilled to visit the Louwman. To see one of only four Aston Martin DB somethings (told you I know nothing about cars) from a James Bond movie put the Louwman up there with a trip to Disneyland. Even as a non-car enthusiast myself, I have to say, the place is home to a wonderful collection that has clearly been put together with considerable passion. The building is gorgeous and the exhibits eclectic. Written background on each exhibit is provided in Dutch and excellent English, and it isn't just dry, technical data. There's lots of human-interest info too, which kept me happy. For instance, one of the small cars was designed and built by the same Canadian man who invented staples. Entry was about 13.50 Euros for an adult ticket and 7.50 for a youngster. We cycled to the museum, which took about half an hour from the centre of the Hague - a lovely ride through the woods etc. The entry price seemed slightly steep, but hey, there probably aren't that many state funds available for car museums. To finish, we had chocolate cake and a drink in the museum café. The staff in the café were really friendly and the coffee was the best I've had this trip to Europe. Even as someone who loathes Top Gear, I'd go back, if only for the coffee ... and to learn a few more random facts about transport from the 17th century to the era just prior to mass production of the cars we so take for granted today.

The entire layout of the museum is done in a clever and artistic way. Even if you are not that interested in automobiles, it is a good look at history in NL.

The last time I visited this museum was more than 30 years ago, at its former location, near the highroad between The Hague and Voorschoten. The new location is near Huis Ten Bosch (the residence of princess Beatrix), along the highroad to Leiden but in a very green environment. I was blown away by the new museum (designed by the American Michael Graves), what a mindblowing collection of old and classic cars. And how tastefully and creatively put together, it's "a wet dream for car lovers". And according to some 'connaisseurs' this is one of the most impressive car musea in the world, (it also host a restaurant and a shop), check out!
