Owner description: The Markthal (English: Market Hall) is a residential and office building with a market hall, located in Rotterdam. The building was opened on October 1, 2014, by Queen Máxima of the Netherlands. Besides the large market hall, the complex houses 228 apartments, 4600 m2 retail space, 1600 m2 horeca and an underground 4-storey parking garage with a capacity of 1200+ cars. The Markthal was designed by architectural firm MVRDV. The grey nature stone building has an archwise structure like a horseshoe. The building has a glass facade on both sides, these are made up of smaller glass windows. The smaller windows are mostly squared and around 1485 millimeters wide. All of these are hung around a structure of steel cables, 34 metres high and 42 metres wide, which makes it the largest glass-window cable structure in Europe. Each facade has 26 vertical and 22 horizontal cables. The inside of the building is an 11.000 m2 artwork by Arno & Iris Coenen, named Hoorn des Overvloeds (Horn of Plenty).

With the Markthal Rotterdam has a new landmark and tourist attraction that can compete with Barcelona's markets. The architecture is awesome, a superb building. In it you can find all kinds of shops with nice foodstuffs, and small bars and restaurants. Also note the small archaeological exhibition with finds deriving from the excavation of this historic piece of Rotterdam, before the construction of the Markthal.

After a month we at least visited the Markthal. Is was in the beginning to crowded, but when we went there last Thursday ( November the 27th ) it was busy but not crowded
In the hal you will find all kind of food stores, and they sell thing you have seen before. Also a lot of small shops where you can eat, Chinese, Japanese, Indonesian, Spanish, greek and many more. The ceiling is printed with all the food they sell. We went to a Greek restaurant "Elliniko"and the food and the service was very good. If you ever will visit Rotterdam , it is a must.

Could be good concept. Idea hasn't been translated into reality. High prices for mediocre shops. Only a few stand out and that's not enough to make the expectations come true.

Wow, wow, wow! This is quite possibly the most fabulous building I have seen in a long time that's not only beautiful to look at, but actually serves a useful purpose too. This is the Markthal: a towering tunnel of clever architecture and a place of worship for those who love their food. Take some time to wonder around this majestic hall of heavenly treats and savor the succulents sights and smells of all the delicious delicacies the world has to offer. Vegetables & Fruits, Meats & Spices, Wine's & Coffee's, intact all the ingredients you could ever need to serve-up a sumptuous banquet for 12 or a royally romantic dinner for two. Whatever it is you need (and plenty of things you didn't even know yet you need), you will find it here in this colorful courtyard of culinary cuture!

I simply love this place since the first time I've been there! So beautiful and brand new!
You can find everything for a good meal in home with your family, or just go out to dinner or eat some tapas with friends... And in the end you can go to the supermarket downstairs. A perfect place in town!
