Owner description: Witte de With is a public institution in the field of contemporary art and its related discourses. Critical reflection on timely issues through curated exhibitions, theoretical and educational programs and a bold publishing arm is core to its mission. Established in 1990 and with Rotterdam as its homebase, Witte de With acts as a dedicated platform for emerging and established artists, curators, and writers from across the globe. Since 1990, Witte de With has presented exhibitions by more than 300 artists, and numerous platforms with international and nation-wide partners to critical acclaim, reaching over 20,000 visitors annually. The exhibitions of artists such as Daniel Buren, Tacita Dean, Isa Genzken, David Goldblatt, Dan Graham, Atelier van Lieshout, Aernout Mik, Haim Steinbach, Luc Tuymans, Jesper Just, Geoffrey Farmer and Ian Wallace reflect the huge diversity of ideas and forms in contemporary art. The focus is on unconventional, critical artistic practices such as recently those of Angela Bulloch, Billy Apple(R), Liam Gillick as well as those of Ulrike Ottinger, John Baldessari, Antoní Muntadas, Rita McBride, Brian Jungen, Annette Kelm, Margaret Salmon, Tris Vonna-Michell, Sarah Lucas, Douglas Gordon and Yto Barrada.

I had a fantastic visit to the Witte de With Center for Contemporary Art. The space itself is huge and spread out, and at this particular time there were two pretty amazing exhibitions that consumed me for about 3 hours. Perhaps it was the time of day (midday on a Saturday) but there were very few other visitors there to get in the way, and it felt like I had the whole place to myself to wander and contemplate. I loved it, and look forward to what they have next time I visit.

We'd decided to go an all-out arty weekend, and it happened to be the 'Museumnacht' night when we there too (weekend of 5th March), but after all the amazing art and exhibitions we'd seen at the Museum Boijmans van Beuningen and the Kunsthal, as well as numerous little galleries during the night (which were free), the Witte de With (which was around 6 euros entry I think) was just not worth it. The exhibitions themselves were unoriginal, except for a few paitings by a local artist, and one exhibition, of a Chilean artist we'd seen before at the Camden Arts Centre in London, was simply poorly displayed - it was an installation that required natural light, yet was housed in a room with no windows, making it cold and completely uninteresting.
The whole atmosphere of the place, unfortunately, was completely uninviting - after a few moments we just really wanted to leave.
