My husband and I had a memorable dinner at t' Ouwe Bruggetje. We walked to the Delfshaven area of Rotterdam and stumbled upon this restaurant- not recommended by our Fodor's guide, which we were using to find good restaurants.
At 5:30pm, the owner and chef greeted us and sat us on the patio though dinner would not be served for another half hour. We ordered a bottle wine and sat and enjoyed the view for the half hour before dinner.
Dining note: They have indoor seating as well.
Location note: Just steps from the Pilgrim Fathers Church (same side).
Like some restaurants in the Netherlands, this restaurant does not have a menu in English. So, we went with the five course dinner "surprise". The surprise is that the diner is at the whim of the chef for the courses. I made one small request- no beef or pork in any of the surprises. The chef and waiter ensured that every dish was edible goodness. Here is what our surprise dinner entailed:
1-Shrimp cocktail in a cucumber dill sauce over greens
2-White fish wrapped around salmon over mashed potatoes with mustard seeds in a bisque sauce
3-Guinea fowl over sauerkraut in a balsamic and apricot sauce
4-Duck in a red wine reduction sauce over green beans and peppers surrounded by quartered baby potatoes
5-Final course: sweet or cheese option. I went for the sweet (a trio- strawberry ice cream over strawberries with cream, chocolate mousse, sweet tea cake) and my husband went for the cheese plate (five cheeses from Denmark, Netherlands, Spain, and France).
I can't say enough what a must this place is. Our waiter was so friendly and knowledgeable. The owner and his wife travel Europe and seek inspiration in their cuisine and wine list (which is extensive). Go share in what they bring to their place!
