“Great to See these Preserved Windmills”

Boottocht Rotterdam - Kinderdijk
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed August 6, 2013

Great little day trip from Amsterdam. Took the intercity train to Rotterdam Centraal, the blue line metro to Rottterdam-Zuidplein and then Arriva bus 90 directly to Kinderdijk. Windmills are approximately 15 miles east of Rotterdam and bus ride is approximately 30 minutes. Returned to Rotterdam and took the metro to visit the Euromast observation deck, then caught the train back to Amsterdam. Enjoyable, fun adventure.

When people travel to Holland they expect to see lots of Windmills. Rather than drive all over Holland why not see 19 windmills of different styles and ages all in one shot? This windmill park is a fantastic collection of windmills brought in from across the Netherlands and reassembled here. Take the boat ride and get the guided tour.

Around 1740, 19 windmills were buuilt in the village of Kinderdijk. These inovative structures drained the water off the polders-the reclaimed land that is situated below sea level.
Nowadays, modern engines do the job.

The windmills are well preserved and present quite a site on the horizon as you walk up to them. There is always at least one working and you have the opportunity to go in one windmill-see how the miller and his family lived.

You can also take a half hour canal tour-the tour guide was excellent-it was worth the time. This is a real slice of "OLD" Holland.

We took the boat form Rotterdam to Kinderdijk in April 2013, on a Sunday morning. We just bought our tickets on the spot. We were not allowed to consume our own food but could purchase it on board. Do note that you will not be able to see the windmills from this boat s it takes you only to the entrance of Kinderdijk.

Must see , but not easy to find. Make sure you have good map and directions 1st!

To see 19 windmills is amazing. This place is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Free car parking after 5pm and the evening is great time for photos but cafe and toilets close approx. 5.30.
