“A Bit Disjointed and lacklustre”

It took some effort to find this museum but i was disappointed when i found it.The museum is a bit cramped on the 3rd floor. It does not go in date order.this might be fine if you know the history of the city, but if like me you know little it is very frustrating. Thus there there is a game to be played to show how much you know about the city.Rather odd. There are English translations ,but to be honest i didnt learn a lot.there is a giant screen with pictures through the ages.this probably tells more than the actual exhibition.

A museum in a nice building in Rotterdam city centre, highlighting Rotterdam history and with changing exhibitions. Overall, quite good, but I left a bit disappointed. Despite all the efforts that went into the exhibitions, they are all way too interactive for me: I want to watch old pictures and text etc about the city, and visit at my own speed, and not be guided by all that interactive stuff. In my view, three quarters of the exhibitions are specifically organised for children, which is a bit too much, because tthere is little left for visitors visiting without children. The companion museum in Delfshaven is even worse in this respect: Nice surroundings, potentially goodd exhibitions, but way too dumbed-down and almost entirely organised for visits with children.

I have been to Het Schielands Huis Museum in about 2002, as I remember going there on a school excursion in the early 1960's!! I was not disappointed as a lot of the exhibitions I remembered were still there, the old Aap Noot Mies reading map, from which we learned to read so many years ago and lots of toys we used to play with. It really was a trip back in time.
The museum shows bits and pieces of Rotterdam and the people, fashion through the years, toys through the years...
I had a lovely time and will return there in July when I will be visiting Rotterdam again.
