The harbour is restored for smaller boats but the carnes from old times are kept in place. There are lots of restaurants nearby and terraces for a beer and diner too

Ships used to dock in this area for almost a hundred years. Now the port has moved towards the Northsea and the abandoned space has been 'redeveloped'. Riek Bakker the chief urban planner of the 1980s envisioned a new modern urban area that would foster the unity of the North and South part of Rotterdam.

However, most people living on the South bank of the river (including me) regard it as an extension of the city centre. Skyscrapers with offices and upmarket apartments, a theatre (Luxor), courtbuilding, the buildings of the Port and Tax Authorities and Ernst&Young occupying the Maastower represent the rulers of a new world dominated by bankers and lawyers.

Still for the average citizen there is plenty of interest: the former Holland America Line building now hotel New York with a good view over the river and Erasmusbridge, youngsters who 'redeveloped' some of the old port buildings (e.g. the food factory), the photo museum, to name just a few. Follow the river bank for a walk to Katendrecht or cycle along the North side of Wilhelminapier to Noordereiland.

It may see odd to review this area since I actually live here. However it is worth a visit as shown by the ever increasing number of walking and bus tours. It's a area full of history and character.

This is a good place to visit while visiting the market as it is not too far away. Lots to see and do and just wander!

This is a wonderful place to visit. It is on the bus line and close to the Market where you can spend hours sampling wonderful food. The houses are each different and one is open for visits. You can also rent one of the houses through one of the networks--not sure which one.
