“Excellent place & terrible salads / food”
Reviewed May 24, 2009

With the watertaxi to this excellent place. Great hotel and good styled. We had a lunch just in front of the hotel (same kitchen). The service is really bad. Not friendly...when they have time ...they come.
We ordered a ceasar salad and a ...duck salad? Well first off all...this was the worsest salad we've ever had!!! They forgot the ansjovis on the ceasar salad ...when I asked for it they gave me...
Is it only the place and the name you pay for? We payed 6,50 euro for some green leaves with cheese and bacon.
The waiter asked if we had a good lunch...well we told the trought. He would bring it over to the cook...but he didn't.
We want to stay in the hotel because thats nice, but we dont eat her anymore !!!

My husband and I went to the Netherlands to retrace our ancestors' footsteps and celebrate our 35th wedding anniversary. My father and his parents immigrated to the USA from Rotterdam in 1917 on a Holland American Lines ship. They left from this spot. So our connection with the hotel had an emotional element to it. The experience was wonderful.
We had a balcony room overlooking the waterways. The view was beautiful, the room was large and uniquely decorated. We didn't look at any other rooms, so we can't speak to those, but ours was clean, bed was comfortable, and the room had wall to wall windows, It is an old building and the rooms have been updated enough to be comfortable and have what is needed, but maintain the feeling of its early 20th century origins and nautical beginnings.
The staff was extremely friendly and helpful. We ate in the restaurant the first evening. The food was very good, and the service was attentive but not overbearing. We were not in a hurry, and the staff recognized that fact. That is the only meal we ate at the hotel.
The hotel is expensive, and a bit out of the way, but the unique atmosphere and character of the hotel are worth every euro we spent!

Stay here whenever on business in Rotterdam. Position-wise, it is a little out-of-the-way, but that's about the only downside. You are surrounded by water, you can take their well priced water-taxi from the hotel to the historic Veerhaven or further, if arranged. The staff are efficient and freindly, the rooms are quirky to say the least and completely individual. While the bar-restaurant is always busy and buzzing with atmosphere and a single business-man has no problem sitting there on his own, people watching. Breakfast is very North European and the food generally very good, although the menu could use the inclusion of some good old-fashioned 'comfort' food.

I enjoyed my stay in Hotel New York. As others have said, the rooms are amazing. My room was massive, with great views of the harbour. Good service from friendly staff. It's a bit pricey, but worth it overall for the experience.

Disclaimer: prior to this stay I had just spent two nights in the Peninsula hotel in Hong Kong, in a deluxe harbourview suite - this is arguably one of the finest hotels in the world, so anything that follows would have a hard time living up to such standards.

Nonetheless, I found the room price of 170 euros for a riverview room (plus 28 euros for breakfast if you want it) terribly overpriced. I guess this is in part because prices in Holland are simply very high and quality levels comparably much lower than in, for example, Asia.

Some problems:
- the hotel was dirty. The public areas (especially the corridors) were in dire need of a clean, as were the sunshades in our room.
- there was no one to help us with our luggage. We had some particularly heavy luggage and despite asking for help, we had to haul it up ourselves. Considering that for 170 euros I can stay at the Ritz Carlton in Singapore or the Peninsula hotel in Bangkok, that was a bit of a shocker. Again, this may be common in Holland so not necessarily a criticism of just this hotel.
- staff were hit-and-miss. Some polite, helpful and friendly, others disinterested and unfriendly.
- when ordering room service no one could tell us how long our order would take. We didn't ask for a specific time just for an indication. They were unwillilng to ring the kitchen and ask if they were busy!
- the greatest disappointment was that our 'view' was actually absent. The reason was that the sunscreens had come down during the day and these cannot be manually retracted. They come down so far that essentially they block the entire view. We asked for them to be put up but since they are not individually controlled this was impossible. This was quite unbelievable to us. As we checked out early the next morning we actually never got to see the view, despite paying for it.
- although I loved the outside of the building and the restaurant and cafe, I generally I found the design and furniture of the room rather cheap. Simplicity is one thing but utilitarian another (metal lockers for your clothes, anyone?).

The good points
- it's a lovely building
- the location is nice
- the cafe/restaurant area is nice (although wait staff are sloooow)

Overall, we were disappointed with this hotel. Apart from some lovely farmstays in Friesland and castle stays in Limburg, we now tend to avoid hotels in the Netherlands and try to stay with friends whenever we can. We then save the considerable investment and spend it where we feel we are getting better value for our money.

I' ve known Hotel New York for ages because I live in the city it's in. I enjoyed the high teas in the restaurant but I had never stayed in the hotel itself. Until now, for my job I had to stay two nights in this famous hotel in Rotterdam ( ask anyone in the city and they will show you the way). And I loved it. The rooms are spacieus, I looked out over the harbour and it's just a little walk from the citycentre ( or you take the watertaxi to be quicker). If you like a special hotel this is the place to be. If you fancy airconditioning and if you hate walking stay away. Because this hotel is at the end of an old harbour side. From here the Dutch emigrants were shipped to New York ( that's were the name comes from).
The only thing I didn't appreciate was that there was not much space for non-smokers at breakfast. But from july 2008 smoking in bars and restaurants is also prohibited in The Netherlands, so you don't have to worry about that very much longer. Just enjoy your stay.

  • Liked — The location and the spacious rooms
  • Disliked — That there was not much space for non-smokers in the restaurant ( but that will change in july 2008)

Has a nautical theme. The rooms are large with interesting interior design.

A colleague finds the rooms too big, cavernous.

But I find the rooms spacious and interesting.

The food is just okay in the restaurant.

Nice location along the water.
