Rotterdam's is one of the great port cities of the world, and seeing it from the water adds a new dimension. Even if you have no interest in ships, you will find this fascinating.

To understand how much the Port of Rotterdam has grown to become the largest Port in Europe, and the World's 3rd biggest after Singapore and Shanghai... the Spido Tour is a must.

10 Euros for 75 minutes is well worth it.

The Tour has a multi-lingual running commentary in a relaxing and modern 'boat'. Taking you past the millions of containers which are loaded/ unloaded around the clock... Rotterdam is one of the World's largest container Ports.

You can see the ship repairs/dry docks along the quayside, indicating the Netherlands status as a sea-fairing nation.

Barges 'chug' along transporting their goods further up the coast of to other countries.

Great views of the city - the Erasmus Bridge, Euromast Tower and other significant and modern buildings which make up the Rotterdam skyline.

I've done the Spido a couple of times during my several visits to Rotterdam and it's a very interesting thing to do... educational too!

Rotterdam as a city: not is interesting as Amsterdam. But the harbour is impressive, and alive, 24 hours a day. So it doesn't matter at what time you take this tour, there is always something happening. The water is busy, always impressive ships, incredible activity in the cargo terminals, definitely worth the one hour 15 min of the tour.

The tour is on an impressively large boat for a tour company - ours had space for 600 passengers according to the sign. Tour lasts 75 minutes and involves a 5 minute trundle upstream before turning around and heading for the first few arms of the port. Could not really hear the commentary but to be honest most of the trip you are looking at containers anyway, either on the dock or being loaded onto ships. The docks and ships you go to see are nowhere near as big as those you see on the similar tour in Hamburg but still quite impressive. The Spido company are missing a trick as although they have a small bar/cafe on board they make you go down to the deck it is on and it seems that you are not allowed to take a coffee away to one of the upper observation decks and enjoy it with a view.

This tour gives you a small idea about the moneymaking engine of the port of Rotterdam. The activities, hustle, bustle, industry and innovation are impressive. Modern, automated, computerized, precise. The weather was great. The ship was fine and the taped description of the points of interest were lively. Will do again on my next trip to Rotterdam.
