“It's a ship, No it's a hotel”
Reviewed March 13, 2013

If you are looking for a unique experience of staying on a ship as well as have all the amenities of a 5 star hotel in Rotterdam, look no further. You have reached the right place.
Once used to be a transatlantic ocean liner, it has now been permanently parked at Rotterdam harbor, and is converted in a full time hotel.
Though I did not stay in it, but I attended a cardiology conference which was held aboard this ship/hotel.

As you enter the ship, you are greeted by the reception staff, who guide you to the conference venue, a decent size auditorium at Promenade deck.
It was very good to hold a crowd of about 300 people. Adjacent to the auditorium, there was a restaurant for the breakfast and lunch. The food was also very good.
SS Rotterdam is very conveniently located just 3 kms from the nearest metro station. And cabs can be organized thru the reception desk.
Overall it was a unique combination of business with pleasure.
Highly recommended.

This is a weird experience staying in a stationary former cruise / passenger ship. I was there for a business meeting and it was a novelty destination. I'm not sure Rotterdam itself has much to offer but there was a bit of a sense of being at sea. Admittedly when I was there it poured with rain and was bitterly cold so there was no strolling the decks or chilling on a deck chair. The rooms were quite big, and very comfy. The windows don't open because they are portholes! And a big drawback was the shower, which only had a shower curtain which didn't stop the bathroom flooding. Messy! Breakfast was quite nice, and in a very industrial kind of space, all exposed pipes and bare tables and floors. The decor is very mid 20th C cruise liner, trendy in a retro way and with lots of lounges and places to settle in with a book and a drink (if you weren't at a work meeting that is).

The SS Rotterdm is an ocean liner that used to link Rotterdam with New York back in the days before jet airliners. Shame I wasn't born then: Travel nowadays lacks the romance of these stately vessels.
You can get a pretty good idea of what it was like by spending a night on the SS Rotterdam which now serves as a hotel in the suprisingly dynamic port city of Rotterdam. The ship has been (re?) fitted in true 1950's style, with all the naive modernist optimism of the era. Not exactly cheap, but worth the occasional splurge because of the unique atmosphere. Walk over to the nearby Hotel New York, another Rotterdam landmark, take a watertaxi into the city and be surpised by its eclectic choice of architecture, culture, nightlife and cuisine.

It took me a while to get used to the idea of sleeping on a former cruiseliner. The Bahamas theme is a little in-your-face but without being unpleasant. The bed was comfortable, there was plenty of space and internet access is provided (wifi is available in the corridors and public areas only). I missed having a bathtub in the ensuite but the shower was ok; a heavier shower curtain is needed, however.
I ate in the Lido on the first night and it was ok, nothing spectacular.
I ate in the Club (fine dining) restaurant on the second night and it was excellent; I had the vegetarian menu and each course was imaginative and beautifully created - a far cry from the vegetable lasagne or salad vegetarianoptions of many restaurants.
Breakfast is in the Lido and there is a lot on offer.
One thing to note; the Lido is accessed via the walkway which is partly open to the outside and in very cold in winter.

Simply out of pure curiosity whilst working in Rotterdam I tried the SS Rotterdam. Mixed feelings about the 1950's decor but anyone who is nostalgic would love the fact that the owners have left the original decor and fittings. The food on board was average but the very fact you are on a ship (albeit not moving) makes the experience quite good fun. I found the cabin (outside with porthole) quite claustrophobic so one night was enough for me. If you are a boat enthusiast then it is worth a try, if not then for the money there are many more and better hotels in this city.

Had visitors from abroad last week and was looking for something special. Perfect choice !
Well equipped bar with a barman that understands his job and a nice view on the Rotterdam Skyline. Choice out of 2 dining options being fine dining and brasserie style. Went for the latter one and my guests were happy. The food was average but the atmosphere does compensate. All in all a good choice if you are in the entertaining game and looking for something special. Not cheap though.

We visited the SS Rotterdam whilst on a trip to the city. This transport ship, come cruise liner, come hotel and tourist attraction is a unique attraction. Its situated on the far south side of Rotterdam and a good walk from the main town centre (at least an hour). If you can get a water taxi to take you, all the better, as there are little other tourist attractions to see once you have crossed the famouis Erasmus bridge.

The ship itself has been totall renovated and turned into a hotel, conference facilities, bars, restaurants, gift shops etc. However, much of the old usage for the ship is still accessible and well worth a visit. You can make your own way around the ship (with restricted access) or take a guided tour which last about 2 hours and takes you to all areas.

Definitely worth a visit.

Room Tip: Take a water taxi from the heart of Rotterdam to reach the SS Rotterdam.
