“An Englishman In The Netherlands”
Reviewed February 9, 2014

I fisrt visited The North End in 2007 while on a day trip while my wife visited the excellant Market. On finding that they had Hobgoblin on tap void to return if we were in The Netherlands.

Subsequently I was back working in The Netherlands in 2011 but this time in Leiden where upon I returned to the North End and became a regular for almost 17 months.

I have had many meals both afternoon and evening and could not fault any. On arriving late on some Sundays ( I travelled on Sunday evenings) I was able to get a sandwich even if the kitchen was offially closed.

The staff were always friendly and convivial and quite often gave as good as they got. The person who complained about the boss should try my local in town. You haven't met such a contacorous person. The boss of the North End Leiden is Mild in comparison.

The atmosphere is what you make it and the company you keep. I have had many an enjoyable evening/morning.

I will be returning later this year to Leiden for a short break and The North End is definately on the agenda.

As for the price of the beers, try some of the specialised Belgian beers, 1/2ltr and compare the prices. For an imported English beer I think the price is reasonable. Fifteen years ago I was paying £5 for a pint in Sweden.

“a real english pub”
Reviewed January 23, 2014

i ordered a sunday lunch of roast beef and yorkshire pudding.
i didnt have to wait long for my meal.
it seemed to be nicely presented or so i thought but once i started to tuck into my meal i was rather disappointed.
my yorkshire pudding was upsidedown and turned over was burnt on the top and clap cold.
the roast potatoes looked and tasted as if they had been cooked and warmed up from yesterday and they too were cold.
the only thing i really enjoyed were the 3 different vegitables.
broccoli,roast parsnips and carrots.
my roast beef which was buried under the potatoes and veg consisted of 3 thick pieces of beef which i couldnt cut properly because they were so thick.
i could have done with a steak knife to be honest.
when i did manage to cut a piece of meat i found it rather tasteless and left most of it.
for what i paid for this meal i dont think it was worth it.
time for the hairy bikers to pay them a call im afraid.
despite this
the staff were friendly and the bar service was good and what you would expect on the bar in an english pub.

“Hearty non-pretentious large portion good meal.”
Reviewed January 21, 2014 via mobile

It's your typical English pub food. Some of the staff are actually from the UK. Decent fish and chips, nice specials, solid Sunday roast.

The service is better than you'll find than most restaurants in Leiden. The prices aren't too bad. I would say that you can get out of there with €20 including a soft drink. Pretty good selection of beers. Lots of English bitters.

If you want a hot meal and you really don't want to spend too much money then check out the north end. It was pretty much my go to spot during my three-week trip.

“Mediocrity, coupled with poor service”
Reviewed November 28, 2013

As a Brit living close to this bar, I have visited many times; at one point considering myself a regular.
The beers on tap include Hobgoblin, London Pride, ESB, Guinness, and an assortment of more local beers, as well as the enormous whiskey selection.
In my opinion, the three English beers fall far short of what you would expect if you were in the UK, to the point of tasting watered-down. This may possibly be because an export version of the beer is used, although London Pride in cans or bottles is noticeably better that this brown water! It's tough to tell the Pride and the ESB apart.
Some of the staff can be very friendly, but this is usually one of the slowest serving bars in town, and with a big attitude problem from the boss. The customer is always wrong.
Beer is about €5.50 for (nearly) a pint, which is slightly more than most.
Whiskey is (in my view) rather expensive, although they do keep an enormous selection - maybe too much for a bar with this turn over. The whiskey is usually served in clean glasses, although it can go through multiple used measuring vessels before it gets there - despite the hefty mark-up, don't expect even one molecule too many!
The water served alongside is frequently in a dirty pot, and frankly the last thing I would be adding to my ancient and carefully crafted whiskey...
I've never tried the food beyond a bowl of chips, which were ok although a tad overpriced.
They do have sport on TV, so if you like the footie then this is good. It's quite a small bar though, so if you're not into sport when a big game is on then look elsewhere. There is a sort of restaurant area at the back, but this seems to be designed so they can complain more at you for disturbing things if you dare to sit in there with a drink.
There are also a couple of tables on the canal.

Popped in here by chance while on a visit to The Netherlands. Great beers on tap, just like being back home! Amazing food, wonderful atmosphere, great music and even better staff! It's a must when coming to Leiden.
