I like great foot--who doesn't? But I'm a bit old-fashioned in preferring what I would call a certain consistency across a dish, meaning that I'm less enamoured than many connoisseurs of a dish that is composed out of a dozen different taste elements and textures. This is not to say that this excellent food was put together in a "wrong" way; it's just that I personally prefer delicious simplicity to extreme sophistication, when it comes to food. Nonetheless, this was a great meal by any standards.
The maitre d' outshines the other staff a bit too clearly; a waiter spilled a bit of food on the back of the seat of someone sitting across from me (we were in a large business group) and I had to warn her not to press her leather jacket against it. He could also not remember who had what and made other small errors.

Terrific meal, and I enjoyed the service but of course I would agree that for a romantic meal, the explanations of the dishes might be rather intrusive. It's one of the downsides of modern cooking... where the whole point is that you can't really tell what's on your plate, it's all crisps and foams and shapes and smears and dots and bubbles... personally I generally prefer food that's like food but that's not what this type of restaurant is FOR! This place is presenting modern fancy entertaining food... so the explanation of what's on your plate is an essential element, otherwise you won't know to be surprised in the right way. It's fashion, right? If you just want a plate, go to a brasserie (and I normally would).

We had a conference dinner upstairs, and it was a simply delightful atmosphere, just us in the private dining room, looking out into the rain, with lovely selection of wines and delicious food. The venison was particularly delicious, both as an ingredient and well cooked and accompanied. Not too much, not too little. Just right. Thanks very much!

I've been here twice now and I will most definitely be back.
It is a smallish place right on the canal. The chef has a gourmet taster menu that changes often enough. Go for it and take the wine arrangement with it. The maitre d' really knows his wines (and grappa's!).
When is the last time you came across the Shiso herb in Holand anyway?

This is my second time at Den Gapenden Eter. The food is really great, although on the pricy side, but it's money well spent: great quality, great recipes. Really excellent. The wine list is also excellent. The only really annoying aspect is that the waiters keep interrupting your conversation to explain what you have in your plate, even if they have just explained it to you 5 minutes before and you've said ok, I'll have it. No, really: I was discussing rather important issues with my colleagues yesterday (and also the previous time) and there comes the waitress stepping in and saying SORRY, I want to tell you what you have in your plate. There was NO way to let them understand that they were disturbing us. Even ignoring them wasn't enough, they would still interrupt us all the time. And get dangerously close to the food with their hands when explaining what this or that was.
So if you are looking for good food: this is possibly the best food you'll get in Leiden. But if you are going to propose to your girlfriend don't go there, or you risk being interrupted at the crucial moment because the waitress can't wait to tell you that you have seabass in your plate.
