Owner description: The National Museum of Antiquities is housed in an old monumental building and ‘Begijnhof’. It is the Dutch centre for archaeology. A large part of the collection consists of objects related to ancient Egypt. Unique is the two thousand year old Egyptian temple in the central hall of the museum. Besides ancient Egypt, the museum covers the Middle East, the Classical world and the early history of the Netherlands. The entire collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, including statues of Roman emperors, Etruscan tomb finds and mummies.

This Museum is considerd to be one of the places where you can find the most spectecular collections of antiquities in this part of the world, western Europe. In the hall you will find a 1 on 1 copy of an old Egypt temple and from there on you will find the nicest artefacts and antiquities you have ever seen. Due to its close relation to the Leiden University, there is a large collection of scientific material accesible to visitors. This Museum deserves at least a half-day visit.

Nice set up of the museum. Very impressive Egypt sarcophages, objects of classical Rome, Greece and Near East.

The Rijksmuseum van Oudheden is situated a ten-minute walk from the centre of Leiden, at Rapenburg 28 2311 Leiden. Phone; (+31) (0) 71-5163 163
We found it a great Museun over three floors and divided up into five sections and covered so much, from the Greeks, Romans, Egyptians and a Nehalennia hall. Evan a kids section on Hollywoods Egypt with cartoons and showing the real and not so real.
The adault price was €9.50 with OAP’s at €7.50 well worth the trip and you could easy spend three to four hours in there, they have a cloakroom as you go in to leave you top coats and toilets on the ground and first floors with disabled acsess and lifts if requiared. There is also a cafe and museum shop. Some of the exhibits do change so it may be wise to have a look at the website before going; http://www.rmo.nl/english You can also find the Museum on Facebook; http://www.facebook.com/oudheden/photos I hope you enjoy your visit.

This is a museum that I visited for the first time when I was some 6 years old, and I have visited it many times since. For a small country, this is an amazing collection of antiquities. Obviously, there is lots of interesting stuff found in the Netherlands, prehistoric, Roman, the lot. But those who do not know the museum or its collection will be surprised to find there a truly excellent range of Egyptian objects (including a complete temple!), a set of painted Greek vases of international importance, Etruscan art, sculpture from all over the Greek and Roman world, and so on. A newly arranged Near Eastern gallery is to open in a few days. This museum is a real treasure trove. It's no British Museum or Louvre, but nevertheless a first-rate collection.

An excellent collection divided between 3 floors. You can see all the highlights in 2 hours approximately. The information is provided in Dutch and partly in English. The Egyptian collection is one of the best in the world. Kids can enjoy a special child-friendly department of Egyptian art. The exhibition about Egypt in Hollywood films is very amasing, for kids as well.
The only minor is that entertainment for kids is limited by Egyptian collection. There is nothing to occupy th kids in the Near East, Greek and Roman departments.
