Owner description: The National Museum of Antiquities is housed in an old monumental building and ‘Begijnhof’. It is the Dutch centre for archaeology. A large part of the collection consists of objects related to ancient Egypt. Unique is the two thousand year old Egyptian temple in the central hall of the museum. Besides ancient Egypt, the museum covers the Middle East, the Classical world and the early history of the Netherlands. The entire collection consists of more than 80,000 objects, including statues of Roman emperors, Etruscan tomb finds and mummies.

One of the best ancient Egyptian collection in Europe. Very well prepared and done. The exhibition is clearly arranged and particular objects are well described and set into broader context. I noticed that there is a special program for children, too. I must admit that I didn't pay a lot of attention to other ancient collections (Greek, Roman etc.) because I was deeply immersed into Egyptian one. I can also really recommend temporary special exhibition Hollywood's Egypt (I think that this exhibition ends in March 2013). It shows the way how the Hollywood has been dealing with the topic of ancient Egypt and I really appreciate a lot of clips from the movies on show.

I'm no Egyptologist but I always enjoy improving my understanding of history. With that objective in mind, this museum deserves a rating of "excellent". I've visited the Egyptian collections in the Metroplitan Museum, the Louvre and the British museum but this museum impressed me the most. Why? Because this museum has signage (in English) that puts each section into historical context. I LOVED this because I actually learned a lot about the super long history of Egypt and I wasn't overwhelmed with details. The summaries are well written and informative. I also LOVED LOVED LOVED the special exhibit called "Egypt as presented in Hollywood" that lasts until March 17th, 2013. If you love old Hollywood movies about Egypt, then you'll dig this exhibit. (Pick up English translation booklet at exhibit entance.) My highlights from the exhibit: Liz Taylor's dress & and some jewelry from Cleopatra, Claudette Colbert's outrageous outfit and her jewelry from Cleopatra. Also includes lots of film clips (on monitors) from every movie ever made about Egypt., including many movies I've never heard of, but would now like to see. If you are a movie buff, you'll love it.
