Owner description: The city hall of Gouda was completed in 1450 and is the oldest gothic city hall in the Netherlands.

If you look carefully, you will see how fragile yet strong the building is. Of course the Dutch did spent time and money to keep it up. It is a preciously well-reserved treasure of medieval architecture. The square around 'Het Stadhuis' offers a market on Thursday and Saturday mornings since the 15th Century.

The city hall looks better from the outside than it does on the inside. Also, the 'tour' (if you can call it that) leaves a lot to the imagination. You get a leaflet and have to make your own way through the building. Since quite a few of the rooms were used for city council meetings, it felt like we were 'intruding' there or something. A bit weird.

Very beautiful city hall located at the main square in Gouda. Best day to visit is Friday when there is no market. The city hall is still used for marriages.

This Gothic city hall of Gouda is situated on a large square in the middle of the old centre of Gouda. The town hall is still being used for weddings as it is so beautiful. There are often activities on this square. The Cheese Market starts at 10.00 and at ± 12.30 the last cheese is sold and taken away. At the same time as the Cheese Market there is also crafts market, a presentation of traditional crafts and products made in and around Gouda, such as earthenware, pipes, clogs, farm produce, treacle waffles and, of course, cheeses.
The cheese market is held every Thursday morning from mid- June to the end of August.
