“The old Jan” is a really nice and cosy restaurant in the centre of Leiden with a very, very good kitchen.
Although we planned to go to the movies, after reading the menu we choose to take a 5-course meal and skip the cinema! And we were not disappointed.
We were served a lovely amuse of a little glas with melon with strings of Iberico ham, and the fried bal (‘bitterbal’) with cheese filling. As a starter we got a terrine of sweet red pepper, ‘hollandse’ grey shrimps and a warm wild gamba. My messmate got lovely veal tartare with tomato salsa.
The second course was plaice fish with sauce of chanterelles mushrooms.
Then we received a dish with guinea fowl with Szechuan sauce, a cannelloni of pak choi and potato mousseline.
The main course was three preparations of lamb with some Provencal veggies.
We swopped the cheese plate for a macaroon with raspberries, sorbet icecream of raspberries and raspberries sauce.
And as dessert we got a terrine of poached peach, Italian meringue and peach sorbet icecream.
Although we actually were satisfied, we ordered an additional dessert, because there were too many tasty desserts on the menu. We finalised with crème brûlée of ‘Haagse Hopjes’ with white chocolate, and the messmate had lime-parfait (special icecream) with red fruits and vanilla sabayon.
At the end we had tea with friandises (coconut macaroon, brownie, cookie, chocolate almonds).
We paid euro 160 for this outstanding evening for two (no wines taken). The service was friendly, professional and pleasant.
We highly recommend every food-lover to visit this restaurant for an exquisite dinner!
