A group of us visited Desafinado one evening, lured by its calling itself a jazz café, and its location on the pretty square next to the Abbey. It seems however that jazz is only on every other Wednesday, so that was the initial disappointment. We decided to hang around anyway, and have a beer and something to eat. The waiter, however, seemed to rather not want to have us spend any money there. He refused to take specific beer orders, pushing us towards different types than the ones we wanted. Later he informed us that because we were so many we could only choose between three of the 25+ dishes on the menu. Fries were not an option, either. In fact the man seemed to have one favorite word, namely "No!"
When the sea bass I ordered finally came, it was a nice surprise: a pleasingly fried fillet and a half with a bed of beans and other veggies, served on a plate adorned with 8 gobs of jam. The combo was unusual, but tasted good. On the side was a small bowl of potatoes fried in oil, so our vegan friend at least could eat those, having been denied his proper 'frittes'...
Basically I would never consider going to this place again, as there are many friendlier dining alternatives in Middelburg.
