We spent three nights at this hotel. Good all-round hotel. Our room was nice and very tidy, bathroom quite small though. Breakfast is excellent and there's a nice pub on the ground floor. Excellent location, old city centre is just a 5 mins walk away.

This hotel is situated nearby the Railwaystation and only minutes away from the very nice city centre. It has a small but nice terrace. Friendly male receptionist/waiter. A good breakfast. The cleanliness is not okay. The beds and shower are clean, but wall and floor decoration were nice 20 years ago. With a litte of fantasty this hotel could be much more nice than at this current situation. Nevertheless you have to try because the location is very good.

Room Tip: Room 307 is a superior room with a nice view at the old Railway station

The modern bar/reception area are pleasant but our room was old and badly in need of updating and a coat of paint as were other areas of the hotel. Whilst spacious, the room did not even have a kettle or cups for a drink or a separate bathroom and the base of the shower unit needs attention. The room had noise from outside, above and from the garden and we had asked for a quiet room. So, a disappointing experience and certainly not value for the rates charged.

Room Tip: Ask to see the room if possible first or ask for one that has a private/separate bathroom

Warm welcome at this hotel, we had a very pleasant stay. Coco the parrot kept us amused with his anticts. Staff very friendly, breakfast was nice, hot and cold food available. Lift available which was great as the stairs were very steep.

A well -positioned hotel with interesting views over the canal . The staff were very helpful and the bar area a pleasant place for a drink after a hard days cycling. The hotel seemed popular with cyclists and there was no problem storing our tandem in the back garden of the hotel . Many local restaurants , although quite a few closed on Monday evening. Good breakfast and comfortable if smallish rooms .

Room Tip: The room with a balcony over looking the canal gave good views of the large ships going by and a lar...

Its hard to give this hotel a review, as if I'd have been inside beforehand I wouldn't have booked it in a million years. Having stayed there one night on my driving holiday of the Netherlands and Belgium, I certainly wouldn't stay there again. Yet, and this is where to review it gets difficult - ironically it was the best nights sleep we all had out of the 7 hotels in 9 nights. The first two nights of our holiday were spent in the Marriott Central hotel in Amsterdam and the final night in the Radisson Blu at Schiphol airport; both charge around £250 per night for a family room for 3 persons. I think we paid around £75 for Hotel De Nieuwe Doelen, and it included breakfast.

Upon entering our room, well after the 5 minutes it took me to take it in, I began to laugh; my 10 year old son had no idea what was wrong with me as I don't think he's ever seen me have a full hysterical fit of laughter before. An hour later in the town it happened again, he joined in, and throughout our holiday we all had outbursts of laughter. So it was actually a great sleep, a great laugh and a life long lasting memory and lesson - you get what you pay for!

Whats GOOD with the hotel; and maybe these are the most important factors:

The bed was very similar in comfort to ours at home; not like a huge block of granite like many hotels - personal preference obviously.
The staff go out of their way to be helpful and they're all incredibly friendly, especially the owner, who we believe is called Edward - talk about a character.
The breakfast was adequate, and I would rate it as fairly hotel standard; having stayed in 7 hotels in the Netherlands and Belgium on the holiday.
The hotel was clean, although for the first half hour I felt nauseous as could smell every cigarette that had been smoked in the place for the last 30 years.
Coco the parrot is an interesting curiosity for visitors, but I don't think he was curious about any of them.
The hotel is in a great location for getting into town and an even better location for the train station that is opposite.
Great TV set-up - better than the Marriott!
We could eat pizza in our room; yes we embraced the place and even played darts.

What was BAD with the hotel (and this could be me being a snob):

I expected to go back in time in Middelburg, but not be stuck in the 1980's. The hotel lift is very quaint; the kind where you pull the door to and there is just enough space for four people. The stairs are hazardous in my opinion (apparently typical Dutch); I preferred to take my chance with the lift. Our room had big sheets of mahogany effect panelling half way around the room, a brass effect grilled suspended ceiling (I sadly remember having one fitted in a bathroom during 1987.) The fitted furniture was quite badly scuffed. The bedding was seriously late 80's; a yellow and blue panelled fabric cover that looks like a thin curtain spread over a quilt - Oh, actually that's exactly what it was. The carpets and curtains in the hotel need a good clean to get rid of the stench of nicotine and it really just needs a good old lick of paint in something as simple as magnolia or white; that yellowed nicotine sponge effect isn't doing the place any favors (Oh, and Edward a feature wall here and there of gorgeous wallpaper; let your girls go to town on it, but note that will need replacing in 10 years as it will no longer be in fashion. Finally, get rid of the 1980's artwork!). Yes, it was nice to plan to decorating again, however it wasn't my hotel to decorate. Its swings and roundabouts as charging as little as £75 per night for 3 people your're going to struggle to upgrade a hotel this size, so you can charge the £100 per night you deserve (I'm talking out of season).

Who would this hotel suit? Groups of people who can look beyond the veneer - mature males or pensioners maybe. You will enjoy a good night in the bar area in the care of the owner (Edward?). You can play darts and drink pints, followed by a good bed and a decent breakfast. And all very cheap (no cheap Coco jokes).

Room Tip: I imagine that a room on the first floor over the bar area could give a disturbed sleep, so unless y...
