“Lange Jan tower”

Abbey Tower of Long John (Abdijtoren de Lange Jan)

Great views, but we were not able to go outside at the top like we hoped. Also, there is only one claustrophobic stairs for up & down, quite difficult if it is busy.

The museum was a bit of a disappointment. The tapestries depicting the naval action against the Spanish are excellent, but that's about it. The rest was low key and could almost be summed up as junk. Some of the things you would expect to see, like traditional Zeeland dress were not on display. The entry fee was rather expensive considering that, but worth it if you want to see some of the best tapestries in the world.

I attended a conference in the abbey and it was a really beautiful place. The staff at the Roosevelt Study Centre in the abbey were also very friendly and the event went exceptionally well.

The Lange Jan (Long John) Abbey Tower in Middelburg is the crown of the Abbey and the old center of town. The tower is visible from most of the town, so it's natural that people want to climb it and see the lovely town and the surrounding countryside from above.
It's 207 steps up to the viewing gallery, and they are for the most part quite narrow and steep. It's to be expected that one is a bit out of breath after the climb. It is a bit disappointing that there is no access to the very top gallery where the carillon bells are located, and especially that there is no open air viewing facility at all. The views are pretty good on a sunny day, but not spectacular.
Entry is 4€, which is a bit much for a visit to a stuffy room with pigeon feathers on the floor. The ticket girl downstairs seems to not expect anyone to address her in English. She certainly doesn't understand the words 'ticket' and 'cash'...

Very large, very old abbey of significance to the historical past of the town. Centuries-old cobblestone around the perimeter and inside the courtyard.
