My wife and I were travelling in Middelburg,NL, without hotel reservations, when we came accross this hotel (Le Beau Rivage) and, since it was late in the afternoon, we decided to come in and request whether they had any double room available for one evening. While there was no one by the reception desk, I decided to ring the bell on the counter, once. After almost a minute wait, I rang the bell again, this time I did it thrice, to make sure this time I would be heard. Suddenly, a red faced man came out and asked me whether I was nervous, at whom I replied with a surprizingly, but firmly: no! Without any explanation, he concluded that I was definitely nervous, and while he detested handling nervous people, he was not willing to even talk to me, giving me no alternative but to turn around and go. In my whole life (I am 59 years old) I had never had any experience like this. I was so shocked at his rudeness, I didn't know what to do. While telling my wife (who was waiting for me outside) about the incident, we both decided that it was imperative to write a review of a hotel we have never stayed at.
I hardly ever comment on bad experiences with people. I rather like to celebrate when someone behaves beyond their normal duties to accomodate or please a guest. However, I think this has been so dramatic, I feel compelled to warn friends, and potential travellers, about the treatment I received in this hotel. I concede it is not fair that we prejudge the place by a single disagreeable experience, but I think I can prevent people from having a similar experience that could tarnish the mood of an otherwise happy vacation.
Everything works together for good, because we finally ended up taking a room at Hotel Den Dam, where we were treated almost like royalty by "Maikel", to whom we have sent a thank you note, with a copy to the management of the hotel. He, and Anita, a friendly receptionist at a hotel in Brussels, where we went after, changed our perception of the trip, and re-established our initial perception of the fabulous "European Experience".
