“Cool, relaxed, friendly, efficient. Great atmosphere.”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 25, 2012 via mobile

Stopped by on a Friday evening for a beer and light dinner. You order drinks and meals at the bar which makes things more efficient. The music was jazz which adds to the atmosphere of relaxed sophistication. Think Pat Metheny. I could have spent a couple of hours but had to catch a train. Alas.

“the perfect brasserie of a theater (call it foyer, it's more elegant)”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 17, 2012

It's my preferite place in Utrecht. Simple but very well cooked food. Always good beers. A place where I like to eat once a week. Don't miss: tomato soup, fries, pork.

The theater should be an "unesco" place. You can take a beer or a tea and drink it during the movie.

If it's afternoon and it's sunny let try to take a sit outside in the sun.

“Surprising, hearty fare -- yes, for vegetarians too!”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 1, 2012

My friend took me here, explaining that this was a place that she liked with a bar, restaurant, and small movie theater. She said one side was "chic-y" and the other "more cool," but that it didn't take reservations and often filled up quickly. Indeed, as we entered the establishment, a bustling crowd of young, smartly-dressed and "cool" Dutch diners seemed to be filling every available table in the first, front area. We snaked further back into the restaurant, passing two other similarly full rooms, before falling upon what seemed to be the only open table at the whole restaurant. Nabbing it quickly, we found a magazine in the rack of magazines behind our table, and read and looked at it to kill time until the server came. Our friendly waitress was happy to bring us glasses of tap water upon request, with no attitude problem to go with them. The menu had an eclectic mix of choices -- the appetizers included breads with tapenades and soups, but we actually ordered the nachos because I was curious what the Dutch version of this typical Tex-Mex snack would be like. The chips were the standard roasted corn tortillas that you'd expect, with a white cheese melted on top -- it's hard to say what kind, but it wasn't mozzarella, as some Mexican restaurants in Europe seem convinced goes well in Mexican dishes (and nope, it doesn't) --, jalapenos, and a black bean dip with a little kick. Pretty good, actually, and a really generous serving. We both ordered off the vegetarian portion of the menu -- there are 3 vegetarian choices at any given time, one of which will usually be vegan -- after considering the lovely dinner salads that are also offered. I had a three-cheese lasagna, which was so rib-sticking that I could not finish it after filling up on nachos and the small side salad that came with the lasagna. The lasagna had nice, not-too-soft, not-too-firm noodles, a light tomato sauce, and mozzarella, gorgonzola, and gouda cheeses. It would have probably filled me up on its own, even if I'd not had the nachos. My friend got a vegetable couscous, which was lightly but deliciously seasoned, and came with winter root vegetables, onions, and garbanzo beans (or chickpeas, whatever you want to call them). Having eaten a good deal of nachos and much of our main dishes, we sadly had no room for dessert. The bill did come out with some Wilhelmina peppermints and little squares of dark chocolate, so there was the sweet touch at the end, which I found a delightful touch. As we ate, my friend was telling me about the joys of the little cinema -- it only has about 12 seats, she says, but shows cool indie films in a pleasant environment. It's a good idea to reserve a seat in the cinema ahead of time, even if you can't do so in the restaurant. I recommend Springhaver for any lover of fresh, healthy, no-nonsense food that will really fill you up, especially for vegetarians who might not find a lot of other choices in Utrecht's restaurants. Oh, yes, and for any American out there who has been missing nachos during their time on the Continent, of course! :)

“Always a favorite for drinks & light bites”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2011

Located on a side street close to the city center, this is a great atmospheric cafe for a drink or a light bite! Food is average, but the chilled out feel and good selection of beers more than makes up for this...really popular, so go late morning or early evening to beat the crowds!
