Owner description: Museum Speelklok, the most cheerful museum in the Netherlands! During a visit to the typical Dutch Museum Speelklok, cheerful live music will surround you from centuries-old self-playing musical instruments. The history of these instruments started back in 16th century the Netherlands with the use of church carillons. Over the centuries, the general desire of people to be surrounded by music, led to the invention of all sorts of self-playing musical instruments: musical clocks, musical boxes, orchestrions (self-playing orchestras) and the traditional Dutch street organs. All of these instruments, including the famous street organ named Arabier and the so-called 8th world wonder the Violina, can be admired and heard during the lively museum tour. Thanks to the highly skilled Restoration Workshop, the collection is kept playing and this craft can be passed on from this generation to the next.

If you like pipe organs from the very old to the obscure. Mantle clocks to church organs to dance hall. Very interesting.

“Quaint, beautiful museum”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

This is a small, beautiful museum of music boxes and clocks. We took a guided tour that lasted an hour (with both English and Dutch), with a young guide who obviously knew his stuff and also seemed to love his work and the museum. We were given lots of demonstrations, heard lovely stories, and the whole museum is a lot of fun for both adults and children. Highly recommended. It also has a nice cafeteria.

“LOUD!”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 23, 2012

This museum of mechanical music is pretty boring if you only walk around. Make sure you do a tour with a guide (included in the ticketprice) and get to hear al the musicboxes.

“A Must See in Utrecht”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 13, 2012

This was quite a delightful museum experience. The ground floor has an amazing assortment of music making machines but the street organ and dance hall organ section is quite spectacular. The guide plays plays about 6 of these unusual machines and the they just make you smile. This would be great for all ages. For those who love quick museum trips, the downstairs guided tour is about 45 minutes and starts on the hour, but you can join the tour at any point and remain for the beginning of the next tour.
