Would have loved to get to the top but my old "coleseum knee" injury reared up and got me on the 3rd floor. :-( saw the bells though, so it was worth it :-D

A true landmark for Utrecht, located in the main square, a stunning building from outside. Possible to climb the stairs and get a beautiful view of the city.

Beautiful way to see Utrecht - although you need to be able to climb a lot of steps!! A very knowledgeable guide added to the enjoyment. Plus, when you descend there are lots of bars and restaurants at the bottom to recover in from the climb.

It took just over 60 years to build this tower in 14th century Utrecht. For ages the 112m (368 feet) high tower dominated the skyline of the city. Only recently permission has been given to build taller structures in the city. Initially the tower served to defend the domain of the ruling Roman Catholic bishop, later after the Calvinist reform in 1581 to underscore the power of the young Protestant Dutch republic.
You can only visit the tower by joining a tour. The price of a ticket is 9€. It means most lower income people in Utrecht and from elsewhere are excluded from visiting. Students and people over 65 can get a small (Dutch) discount of 1.5€

You have to go in a guided group and the tour lasts an hour
We had an excellent guide in Laura. She spoke Dutch and English
The Dom is interesting but not not exciting
The views from the top would be better if Utrecht offered more landmarks
It is worth doing but only just

You can't enter unsupervised, but I ended up preferring the a one-hour tour that takes you through and up to the top of Dom Tower. The tower has been immaculately maintained--the brick, the stone, the stained glass--really stunning. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and funny. If you go, you'll learn more about why Dom Tower contains, objectively speaking of course, the best and most beautiful bells in all of Europe. I just can't say enough good things. Money well spent.

Oh, if you have limited mobility or trouble climbing steps, skip the tour. A couple of people had to call it quits after climbing to the first level.

Be prepared that the stairs in the domtoren are narrow and can be "slippery". Would recommend good walking shoes (not high heels etc). €9 for an adult ticket and around €7 for students, which is a bit pricey for such a short tour (about 1h). Otherwise nice and quick tour with historical aspects and a gorgeous view of Utrecht and Amsterdam in the distance.

Worth the climb! The view is amazing, but what is more special is the sheer experience of climbing these ancient stairs, built by man so many hundreds of years ago. Wow!

Utrecht is a small cute city that one can enjoy her day and Dom should definitely be a part of it! It is great that you don't climb the tower with a huge crowd. You make an appointment and a guide take a group of 4-6 people to the top. They tell the history of the tower and the best part of it is that you see the huge bells and have a chance to ring them :) Definitely worth to climb!
