“walk a little further”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2013

arriving at zaanse schans it will be hard to escape from the photographer and the souvenir shops clustered at and around the entrance, but be a bit more adventurous and start at the end of the complex where you will find the beautiful traditional Zaanse houses. Most are still inahbited and give you the feeling you're walking within a true village. Don't miss the Original Albert Heijn shop, offering product of a century ago and enjoy the tranquil atmosphere. Do also visit some of the traditional and Original windmill, remains of the more than 500 that used to be around this part of Holland. And then, when you have some time left, then maybe you can also visit a shop. The one making the traditional wooden shoes also boasts a nice collection and can be regarded as a small museum.

“Touristy”

Loads of busses full of tourists, but it does show some nice windmills and scenery. Some windmills sell their own made products.

“Wonderful introduction to Netherland culture”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 17, 2013

Easily reachable from the city, this open air museum impressed us with its several workshops and demonstrations. The cheese farm, wooden shoe workshop, the spice mill were all wonderful. Try your best to the catch the wooden shoe making demonstration. Also a Fantastic place to view the windmills. The only negative I could think of this place is the huge crowds in summer.
My kids loved this place and didnt even mind the crowds!

“Free tourist destination”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 14, 2013

We took the train from Zaandam to Zaanse Schans and walked the lovely 10 minute or so stroll through town to the windmill village. What a sight! The rows of windmills along the river were beautiful and it was great to explore the village for free. We went into the spice mill (a free attraction) and were interested to see the mill in action and watch an informative video about the mill. This is not the type of place to spend all day but is definitely a great, picturesque place to visit if you are in the Amsterdam area.
