“Wonderful interior and awesome church organ, both visually as acoustically”

Sint-Bavokerk (Church of St. Bavo)
Reviewed April 18, 2013

Many years ago I had a talk with legendary Dutch keyboardplayer Rick Van Der Linden (Ekseption and Trace). He told me about his passion for the St. Bavo church organ and from that moment I was determined to experience it. Well, today I visited the S.t Bavo church and only shortly after I entered this impressive church, I could enjoy the breathtaking sound of the St. Bavo church organ, goose bumps! But I also enjoyed the wonderful interior of the church, all those archs, stained glass windows, huge columns and wooden interior, very special!

Fras Haals is buried here, there are some model sail ships donated by local shipbulders several hundred years ago and some very interesting chois stalls.

A much more harmonious church than the Grote Kerk in Amsterdam. A lofty gothic church with beautiful wooden fan vaulting and crisp, white walls. Entry charge is currently €4,50. Some beautiful modern stained glass, as well as the most over-the-top of classical organ cases. The church has been restored sympathetically outside and in and is still used for worship. Worth a trip out from Amsterdam on its own, though Haarlem has plenty else to offer as well.

Immense, cold and empty but very atmospheric and worth the small entry charge, unusual for a place of worship.

If you're looking for something beautiful to see that has lots of history take a tour of the St. Bavokerk. This houses the organ that Mozart and Handle both played on. It is a beautiful church! There is a small fee of 2.50 euro which helps the church with maintenance, well worth it!
