“Beautiful church with an amazing organ”

Sint-Bavokerk (Church of St. Bavo)
Reviewed September 4, 2012

While heading to the Corrie ten Boom house, we encountered this church. We gladly paid the small charge to get inside. The entire facility is just amazing, not counting the organ. The evening of our visit, a concert was scheduled. My wife and I considered "missing" our ship so we could hear it.

We did hear a few stray notes when we first arrived, but then they stopped. Must have been some maintenance or something.

Awesome, old-world cathedral. So much history, fascinating! There's a small snack and coffee area in the church, great to take a break for coffee and cookies. Be sure to see this when you visit Haarlem.

A massive cathedral, stripped of all catholic pomp when the protestants took over. The huge space is filled with light and air. The organ is massive.

We entered Haarlem by bus and could see the impressive Church from a distance, with the amazing spires and roof. The tourist information booth gave us information about the Church and a map guide. On the Saturday we went there was a market outside which added to the lovely atmosphere.

Openning times are from 10am and there is a modest entrance fee. We got there just as it openned so were the only people inside the impressive Church, apart from somebody who was "playing" the organ. Maybe they were just tuning or practicing as it sounded loud - but like it was being played by a 10 year old! Shame as would have been fantastic to hear it being played in ernest! Amazing organ though!

There are toilets inside the Church and also a little cafe!

Services only seem to take place on a Sunday.

It is a nice old Dutch Church, it is nice to visit and take a look, as you are in the town anyway... Nice windows, some nice decorations... and at least you don't have to pay an entrance fee which you have to in plenty of churches all over Europe!. You can go in and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere, exactly what a church is meant to be.
